Kezhi Garden Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Kezhi Garden, 课植园, is a haven of peace and tranquility inside Zhujiajiao Old Town. I visited Zhujiajiao on Qingming Festival, and while most of the old town was packed, there were very few people inside the Kezhi Garden. Perhaps the nondescript entrance or the ¥20 admission kept visitors away, but for me it was a highlight of the whole trip.
Built by the Ma family and dating in part to the Ming Dynasty, it includes classical gardens and buildings, a two storey library and a small farm, where the patriarch of the family encouraged his progeny to learn farming as well as scholarly activities so they would better understand the world and be able to enjoy the satisfaction of manual labour. The model farm was planted with bright yellow rapeseed and vegetables when I visited.
Don't miss this hidden gem when visiting Zhujiajiao.

One Foot Garden (Silo Store) was established in 1954, with an indoor silo area of about 700 square meters, and it has a history of nearly 70 years. This building is the grain silo site of the second rice mill in Qingpu, witnessing the transition of the grain and oil industry from traditional to modern, and the transition of living resources from scarcity to abundance.
One Foot Garden retains the architectural form and spatial elements of the past grain silo, and incorporates new lifestyle designs. The high-top arc-shaped staggered space, each layer is given a new experience.

Zhujiakou Kezhi Garden| The beauty of the autumn scenery of the manor-style private garden
| The beauty of the autumn scenery of the manor-style private garden. Located in the northwest of Zhujiakou ancient town, Kezhi Garden is a larger garden building in the area. The garden is full of small bridges and flowing water, with a different view at every step. It is a worthwhile paid scenic spot with a quiet environment. The Kezhi Garden, which was built in 1912 and took 15 years to complete, was once the private residence of local tycoon Ma Wenqing.
The design structure and decorative building materials of this garden, many of which are in the form of a combination of Chinese and Western styles, are a feature of Kezhi Garden. The garden is divided into two parts, Ke Garden and Zhi Garden. The two words "Kezhi" imply the meaning of "not forgetting farming while studying", which reflects the peaceful psychology of the garden owner's farming and reading.
The first thing you enter is a series of hall buildings, including sedan hall, guest hall, welcome hall, etc. The halls are carved beams and painted buildings, with very exquisite decorations. The roof surface adopts a double-layer tile-row board structure, which has the miraculous effect of being warm in winter and cool in summer. The Yimen behind the head hall is also decorated with fine brick carvings, which shows the luxurious style of the rich family everywhere. Through the hall is a winding path leading to the garden. Wangyue Tower and Shucheng are typical Chinese and Western buildings in the garden. The stele gallery in the garden is inlaid with stone carvings of poems and letters from the four great talents of the Ming Dynasty, Tang, Zhu, Wen, and Zhou.
There are pond rockeries, pavilions, towers and pavilions in the garden, as well as theater stages, nine-curved bridges, and inverted lion pavilions on the rockery. The plants in the garden are very lush, and you can feel peaceful and quiet while walking in the green path. Unlike many Jiangnan gardens, this garden also has paddy fields, vegetable fields and orchards in the depths, named "Daoxiang Village". This was the garden owner Ma Wenqing's way of letting his children and grandchildren experience the hard work of farmers and the concept of farming nine and three, and he often worked in the fields as an example.
In summary, Kezhi Garden is a garden building with unique charm. It not only has a combination of Chinese and Western architectural styles and exquisite decorations, but also has rich cultural connotations and historical background. Visitors can feel the charm of Chinese traditional culture and the charm of Jiangnan gardens here.

Close to the lotus pond west is the garden area, also known as Daoxiang Village. It is planted in various fruit trees such as peach, plum, apricot and medlar. It is also planted with ancient trees such as Ziwei, Xiangyuan, Luohansong and Gusong cypress. Perennial lush, tree-lined, Mars Ancestral Cemetery is also set aside. In the southwest corner, there is a small tourist area with small rockeries, lotus ponds, nine curved bridges and upside down lion pavilions. The pavilion is also known as the "five-corner pavilion". It is worth mentioning that the pavilions are all four-corner or octagonal. The pavilion has a rare shape and is a five-corner building. It is quite difficult in architecture, which shows the craftsmanship of the craftsmen at that time. high. On each of the five corners, there is a hanging wood to the lion, the shape is vivid, the image is realistic, vivid.

A unique garden hotel in an ancient water town that cannot be replicated
Address: Zhujiajiao Town, Qingpu District, Shanghai
Standing quietly at the intersection of the mundane world and the dreamland, nestled in the arms of the southern water town, it is a labyrinth of time, condensing a long period of time in the bustling city. Stepping into it, it seems to have traveled through time and space back to the prosperous scene of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Zhujiajiao Anlu, an ancient architectural hotel hidden in the suburbs of Shanghai, seems to be an island of time.
Imagine, when you push open that ancient door, it seems to have traveled through the time tunnel. The ancient house reveals the elegance and poetic painting of the southern garden everywhere. Each room is full of historical and cultural atmosphere. The choice of bedding makes people feel luxurious and comfortable. The texture of pure cotton high weaving, fits the skin, allows a good night's sleep. The traditional carved window screen separates the bedroom from the living room perfectly, maintaining the transparency of the space, ensuring privacy, and has the breath of appreciating the scroll.

This place is truly an all-capable vacation paradise!
The hotel has been on my mind for a long time, and I finally got the chance to stay here! It did not disappoint me at all. Besides the satisfying service and rooms, the hotel also brought traditional culture to its peak! It's like a wonderful journey into the architectural culture of ancient China!
When we checked in, there was a super considerate housekeeper lady who took us to our room and introduced all the facilities in the room! I didn't even need to explore by myself, she was really thoughtful!
The guest rooms here are all terraced villa-style, with wooden structures and decorations, spacious and comfortable, each room has double-sided washbasins and a private garden, and the view outside the window is simply panoramic, stunningly beautiful! It's the perfect interpretation of simple elegance and tranquility!
Shortly after we checked in, the housekeeper brought us a bowl of sweet soup according to the changes of the twenty-four solar terms, making me feel completely surrounded by warmth! This is really thoughtful!
The hotel's facilities are very comprehensive, with an all-day dining restaurant, snack bar, book loft, spa, indoor swimming pool... it's simply equipped with all kinds of facilities! I must say, this is truly an all-capable vacation paradise!
Moreover, you can freely experience the four arts of zither, Go, calligraphy, and painting in the lobby bar, and even wear Hanfu to feel the elegant ancient charm! It's really interesting!
Right opposite the hotel is the bustling Zhujiajiao ancient town. Compared to the bustle there, this hotel exists quietly like a serene haven! It's as if time has stopped here, giving a sense of unique tranquility!

Weekend Retreat | Stay in a 600-year-old Ming Dynasty residence at Anlu in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai
Stay in a 600-year-old Ming Dynasty residence at Anlu in Zhujiajiao, Shanghai. After a month of business trips, I'm really tired and ready to take a short vacation for myself. The summer in the south is really too hot, and as someone from the north, I really don't want to travel too far, so I booked this hotel that doesn't require leaving the city. No need for exhausting travels, just a perfect staycation right here.
What attracts me here is mainly that it is a 600-year-old Ming Dynasty ancient architectural complex. There are only 35 townhouse-style guest rooms, and the style of the rooms is a combination of classical and modern Chinese. Each room has its own small courtyard, and the rooms are named with numbers, such as 'Shiliu', 'Sanyi'... This time, I stayed in 'Ling Er'.
🏯 The hotel's front lobby area was restored over five years by a hundred national treasure-level ancient craftsmen, who relocated and reconstructed the 'Number One Official Hall in the South of the Yangtze River'—the Wufeng Building. The ancient charm of the historical building blends well with the modern design of the hotel's landscape swimming pool area. The perfectly symmetrical architectural aesthetics are very friendly to people with OCD. In the hotel lobby, you can practice calligraphy, play chess, or play the guqin. At 10 a.m., there is also boxing practice, which is especially suitable for dispelling dampness in this hot season.
🏠 The hotel has a high level of privacy, and with the attentive butler-style service, no matter when I return to my room, the bathroom is always clean and tidy. It feels like it's not just cleaned once a day, which is very considerate. Every staff member I meet when going out or coming back greets me warmly. When I return to my room at night, the turn-down service is already done, and they also prepare sweet soup corresponding to the current solar term 🍵 which is very comfortable.
🛁 My favorite part is the room's bathroom, which is very spacious. Lighting some sandalwood during a bath can be very relaxing. The bathroom also has two sinks, with corresponding men's and women's exclusive toiletry kits, and the bath products are a full set of Hermès ✨. I really like the bathrobe here; it's tailored and doesn't look as bulky as those in other hotels. Wearing it gives you that cinematic feeling of a Parisian woman's graceful figure.
🌟 Because there are not many guest rooms, the swimming pool is basically empty, so swimming alone is very comfortable. For breakfast, there are Chinese and Western options to choose from. Since I stayed for two days, I tried both, and they were both very good, with generous portions, so much so that it's basically a brunch after eating.
🚊 Transportation
Metro Line 17 goes directly to Zhujiajiao, and after getting off, you can take a bus to Zhuhu Road Botanical Garden (many bus lines reach there).
Opposite the hotel is the Zhujiajiao Ancient Town scenic area. If you don't want to dine in the hotel, you can also go to the restaurants in the ancient town. I usually just sit here, drink tea, listen to music, and watch the boats, which is very enjoyable.
