Offsetting your flight's carbon emissions with Trip.com
Your travel footprint matters
We need to recognize the impact traveling has on the environment. With aviation accounting for at least 2% of global carbon dioxide emissions, we must learn how to travel differently, especially when opting to fly. By offsetting your flight's carbon emissions, you're directly supporting some of the most impactful climate solutions available today. Your offset will support projects that reduce, capture, or avoid carbon emissions in an amount equivalent to your calculated carbon footprint.
We have made it easy for you to address the carbon footprint of your journey.
With simple steps, you can ensure that the carbon emissions from your flight are accounted for and offset via some of the best climate projects around the world. Your offset contribution goes directly to supporting CO2 reducing climate projects that are verified by the most comprehensive and stringent international standards.
How do we calculate emissions?
We calculate emissions based on factors like distance, capacity, and cruise time. Since most emissions come from take-off and landing, non-stop flights are often the greenest.
  • Aircraft type
  • Modern aircraft are up to 30% more fuel-efficient than older models.
  • Flying direct
  • Take-off and landing use the most jet fuel on every flight. Flying direct means you only do this once.
  • Airline rating
  • An overall rating of how well an airline is performing on multiple CO2-reducting factors.
  • Passenger load
  • Fully booked planes have more passengers, which means less CO2 emission per passenger.
  • Cabin class
  • More passengers can fly in economy class seats because they take up less space, which means less CO2 emission per passenger.
How does carbon offsetting work?
When you book a flight with us, you'll see the option to carbon offset for a small cost.
Your contribution helps to balance out the impact of the flight's emissions by funding carbon-reducing projects.
CHOOOSE ensures your money goes directly to climate-protecting initiatives around the world.
Meet our decarbonization partner - CHOOOSE
Our carbon software solution is delivered by CHOOOSE™, a leading climate-tech company headquartered in Oslo, Norway. Together with its ecosystem of industry partners and individual supporters, the CHOOOSE platform accelerates access and adoption of climate solutions across a range of key technologies – from nature-based solutions to carbon removal to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

All of the projects selected by CHOOOSE carbon professionals and verified by the most comprehensive and stringent certification standards to ensure that your offset creates the highest possible climate impact.
Where your money goes
Landfill Gas Extraction and Electricity Generation Project in Turkey
The project involves the development and construction of two waste-to-energy facilities at both the Odayeri and Komurcuoda landfill sites. The project objective is to build, operate, and maintain two landfill waste-to-energy systems consisting of landfill gas (LFG) collection systems, flaring stations, and gas engines coupled with generators to produce electricity. The gas engines will combust the LFG to produce electricity, and any excess LFG will be flared.

The Breathing Space Improved Cooking Stoves Program in India
The project is a voluntary Program of Activities (PoA) that aims at disseminating improved cook-stoves in households of India. A large portion of the rural population in India is dependent on traditional mud cook stoves commonly referred to as chulhas for cooking. These traditional cook stoves are energy inefficient resulting in incomplete burning of biomass thereby releasing high levels of indoor air pollutants and GHG emissions. The program envisages offsetting the high-emission, low efficiency traditional cook-stoves by dissemination of high efficiency, low-emission, improved cook-stoves.

The Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project in Cambodia
The Southern Cardamom project contains 2000+ hectares of pristine mangrove forest and helps to protect and enhance a further 50,000+ hectares of mangroves that directly surround the project boundary. The Project will prevent the emission of an average of 3,580,834 tonnes CO2e annually by avoiding deforestation and forest degradation. This will be achieved largely by training on improved agricultural methods, creating alternative income sources, creating new jobs and employment opportunities, and supporting improved environmental law enforcement across the landscape.

The Envira Amazonia Project in Brazil
The project is a payment for ecosystem services forest conservation project, otherwise known as a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD+) project, on 39,300.6 hectares or approximately 97,072.5 acres of privately-owned land in Acre, Brazil. The project activities are to undertake a forest carbon inventory, model regional deforestation and land-use patterns, and mitigate deforestation pressures by utilizing payments for the project's ecosystem services, along with ongoing monitoring of the climate, community and biodiversity impacts of the project.

Frequently asked questions
What's a carbon footprint?
When we talk about a "carbon footprint", we're referring to the emissions of greenhouse gases in relation to a certain activity, such as flying. In terms of flights, the carbon footprint is primarily made up of carbon emissions. These are the emissions you can offset by choosing to offset your flight on Trip.com.
Why should I offset my carbon emissions?
The world urgently needs action on climate change. Organizations around the world, including the United Nations, are promoting the need to transition to a climate-neutral society. Time is critical, and the more climate positive actions we can take now, the better. That goes for individuals and companies alike; we all need to address our emissions. By changing our habits and buying environmentally friendly products, we can help to minimize our carbon footprint. Yet we can't quite erase it entirely; just streaming music or charging our phones comes with a carbon cost. That's where carbon offsetting comes in. It's an effective way of addressing those emissions you simply can't cut down on right now.
Where does your carbon offset contribution go?
It's debited directly by CHOOOSE and then put towards Gold Standard, the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) and the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB) certified projects through the purchase of Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) or Certified Emission Reductions (CERs). These credits represent the emission reduction achieved. Once used, the credits are permanently retired on the applicable carbon registry to ensure they're only counted once. For every contribution made, CHOOOSE retains a small service and technology fee of just €0.70 per booking to cover their running costs. Even seemingly small contributions go a long way and will typically offset more than their calculated footprint, so you can rest assured that the balance in carbon emissions is committed to.
When can you offset carbon for a flight?
We've tried to make offsetting your flights as seamless as possible, so we give you the opportunity right when you book - you'll see the option to offset your flight before you make your payment. You can also offset all flights any time with CHOOOSE directly.
"Travel is a powerful means of bringing people closer – to share the beauty of our countries and cultures, to find our common humanity. But with travel comes the duty to protect our fragile planet. Together, we must act now, and act more responsibly, to ensure that generations to come can too explore our world."
