Poetic Influences with the Trowbridge Stanza | Drawing Projects UK

Literary Arts
Join us for Poetic Influences, our monthly Poetry Session with the Trwobridge Stanza on Saturday 5 April at 2pm. . We'll be celebrating and reflecting on our poetic influences at our April poetry event. Everyone will have the chance to read us some poetry that has influenced their writing, as well as sharing some words of their own. Like all our events, this is open to writers of all levels of experience, and you don’t have to be a member of Trowbridge Stanza to come along. There is a little bit of preparation required, but hopefully this will be as nourishing as the session itself. You need to come with 2 to 3 pairs of poems - each pair consisting of a poem that inspired you, and a poem you wrote as a result. DON’T be intimidated by this. You don’t have to write like Shakespeare to be inspired to write a love poem! We all have influences, whether we’re aware of them or not. Perhaps a writer’s themes inspire you. Maybe it’s their style of writing, their vocabulary, the mood they conjure up. It’s wonderful to recognise that magical thread between what we read and what we write. You could approach your preparation in a couple of ways: Read something new and different (or dig out an old favourite) and write some new poetry inspired by what you read. Have a look at your existing poems. Perhaps you know what influenced them. Perhaps, looking at them with this exercise in mind, you’ll see influences in there that you hadn’t previously acknowledged. This will be a fascinating chance to both share our own writing, and gush over writers we love. It would great to get a mix of classic and contemporary influences. Depending on the number of attendees and the amount of discussion, we’ll try to get around everybody at a couple of times - but no guarantees! Happy writing / digging / reflecting, and we look forward to seeing you on 5th April! Information Source: Drawing Projects UK | eventbrite

Join the Trowbridge Stanza at Drawing Projects UK on Saturday 7 December at 2pm for a Poetry Christmas List Generator & Book Exchange. All of us who enjoy poetry would love some books in our stockings! However, the world of poetry publishing is fragmented and it’s sometimes hard to discover the real gems out there. For December's poetry event at Drawing Projects UK, we are asking all participants to bring along two books that you think everybody should be putting in their letter to Santa. These can be books of poetry, or books that have inspired you to write poetry. Be prepared to read a couple of poems or extracts from each book, and to share with others why they will love it! Please also bring along, if you’d like to, any poetry books that you’ve finished with and you think others would enjoy. Be prepared to take away any unclaimed books afterwards please. All welcome. We'll also start this session with a short meeting - a 20-30 minute discussion of what we’d like from our monthly poetry events from now on. Have a think about what types of events you enjoy most (or would enjoy most). Open mics? Workshops? Discussions of published poetry? Guest readers? We’ll also have a chat about whether to continue as a stanza of the Poetry Society, and anything else you’d like to discuss. Please come with thoughts & ideas! SNAPSHOT Shorts @ Thingy Cafe + drinks! Join us for the very last screening of SNAPSHOT shorts! Black girls coming of age on their own terms. From the suburbs of Essex to the heart of Brooklyn, T A P E's SNAPSHOT season shines a light on Black girls navigating identity, friendships, and self-discovery. Through a mix of radical archive films and contemporary storytelling, this programme captures the multifaceted experiences of Black girlhood—allowing them to dream, define, and grow on their own terms. Featured Films:Essex Girls (2022) | Dir. Yero Timi-Biu Flipping the 'Essex Girl' trope, this coming-of-age film explores Black British girlhood and magical female friendships in 2009 Essex. Picking Tribes (1984) | Dir. S. Pearl Sharp In a heartfelt, and often hilarious, attempt to be more than ‘ordinary,’ a girl growing up in the 1940s tries to choose between her African-American and Native-American heritages Home Away From Home (1993) | Dir. Maureen Blackwood To ease her homesickness, Miriam recreates an aspect of home in her suburban British garden. Cultural memory exerts a healing power, combatting the rift between Miriam and her Nigerian-British children. Muna (2023) | Dir. Warda Mohamed A film about teenage dreams, dislocated grief and unexpected connection, following a British-Somali teen navigating a confusing mourning period for a family member she never met. Flight of the Swan (1992) | Dir. Ngozi Onwurah A young girl leaves her Nigerian village to attend a ballet school in England. Fascinated by Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, she dreams of performing as lead ballerina Princess Odette, but the girls in her close-minded ballet school mock her ideas of a 'black swan'. Content warning: Please note that viewers may find Picking Tribes upsetting as it includes historical racist language and a brief depiction of lynching in the US. We carefully considered the inclusion of the film and felt that as it was directed by a Black woman (as are all the films featured in the programme), we wanted to include it to truthfully represent the sentiments, worries and politics of the times. Join the Trowbridge Stanza Poetry Workshop: Obsessed with Detail led by Nina Parmenter on Saturday 3 May from 2pm to 4pm. Prior to the workshop there will also be a meeting to kickstart the Trowbridge Stanza Anthology project, and to talk about future events from 1.15 - 2pm. Come along at 1.15pm if you'd like to join the Stanza meeting, or come at 2pm if you'd just like to take part in the workshop. During our usual timeslot, from 2-4pm, we'll be having a workshop, open to all and led by Nina Parmenter, about the use of detail in poetry. How can we use small details to huge effect? What can specific, tiny images tell us about a person, a place, a moment? How can details shock us? How can they illuminate truths? How do we encapsulate whole worlds in the smallest of things? This is a prompt-based workshop - we'll be looking at some example poems and using them to inspire us to start poems or sketches of our own. There will be plenty of time to share (for those who'd like to!), dissect and discuss! Just bring your brain and whatever you use for writing. Nina will be setting exercises on two levels by the way - as some people find themselves writing prolifically during workshops, and some people find they dry up a little. So alongside our poem prompts, Nina will set a "sketch" exercise for anyone who wants to just make lists or create a few images that will help them to write a poem in their own time and surrounded by less people! Optional pre-meeting for those interested on the Trowbridge Stanza Anthology project at 1.15pm: If you're a regular Stanza attendee and you'd like to be involved in this, please come at 1.15pm. We're looking for people to take some roles in the anthology project and just for a general discussion of how we approach it.If you don't want to be involved in the organisation of the anthology, that won't exclude you from submitting work. The criterion for submission is that you're a fairly regular attendee of Stanza, having attended at least 3 sessions in the year leading up to the submission deadline (which will probably be in September). We're also looking for ideas for a possible one-off community focussed event. The event will not be until next year, so there's not much to do at this stage except come up with ideas .We're looking for events that might inspire people to join us who might not normally attend a poetry event. It might be connected to art, or history, or music, or our local landscape (urban or rural) for instance. It might take place outside, on foot, or at an inspiring local place. It's a long session, but don't worry! The excellent Arthaus coffee shop will be open for creative fuel, both liquid and cakey! Information Source: Drawing Projects UK | eventbrite
