Letham Nights #84 - Matt Carmichael | Letham Village Hall
Concerts
Alternative
We are beyond excited to have booked one of the trailblazers on the Scottish jazz-folk scene:
Matt Carmichael
And as you maybe know, we are in a golden age of jazz music in Scotland where players like Matt, together with Mercury Prize nominees, Fergus McCreadie and Liam Shortall of corto.alto are receiving critical acclaim with a global reach. His most recent album 'Dancing with Embers' has recently been released and will be available at the show including in vinyl.
Heralded by BBC Music Magazine as 'a distinctive new voice in a crowded scene’, saxophonist and composer Matt's compositions are a powerfully emotive blend of Jazz and Folk music. He has performed throughout Europe, at Celtic Connections, Ronnie Scott’s, Love Supreme, Bimhuis as well as being a guest soloist with the Grammy Award winning WDR Big Band in Germany where his music was arranged by Bob Mintzer. He is also a lynchpin in the seriously talented Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, led by Tommy Smith.
Some of the musicians Matt has collaborated with include Fergus McCreadie, Rob Luft, Bob Mintzer, WDR Big Band, corto.alto, Charlie Stewart, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Kathleen MacInness, Liv Andrea Hauge, Innes White, Juliette Lemoine, Kim Carnie and Rachel Sermanni.
The Letham Nights team have seen some stunning performances from Matt already this year: at the Barony Hall doing his own Celtic Connections show, with Breabach in a unique collaboration with SNJO in the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and then again with SNJO at Dundee Rep. We were gobsmacked!
The Letham Nights show will see Matt’s quartet take to the stage with his long-time collaborators Fergus McCreadie (keys), Ali Watson (bass), and Tom Potter (drums).
And now we can't wait!
Opening Act Announcement!
We are delighted to present 'Me For Queen' as our opening act!
With a voice often likened to Carole King and Regina Spektor, a classical piano training, and influences ranging from Björk to Chopin, Me for Queen – the creative alias of Mary Erskine – is rapidly winning acclaim for her beguiling ‘soul-folk’ songcraft, blending traditional folk story-telling with a contemporary edge. Growing up feral in rural Fife/Scotland, years of classical training together with a Blues guitarist for a father make for an interesting mix of soul and folk.
Her much-anticipated debut solo album, “Loose End” was released via Seahorse Music in September 2018, followed by an EP “Perfect Stranger” exploring motherhood, a collaboration with the Nashville singer, Alva Leigh.
Mary has enjoyed support from BBC6 Music and BBC Radio Wales and BBC Scotland; the album was Record of Note on Roddy Hart’s show and the single, Loose End, was Single of the Week on the Janice Forsyth show.
In 2019, she was invited to tour as musical guest with the Guilty Feminist podcast, playing venues including the Birmingham Symphony Hall.
Her song, “Jessica” was included on Spotify UK’s playlist, “The Most Beautiful Songs in the World” and has racked up over 100, 000 plays.
