When we think of great works of fiction – and our favourite books – it tends to be the characters that linger long after the intricacies of plot have faded: Nazneen Ahmed, Scrooge, Elizabeth Bennet, Eleanor Oliphant, Marx Watanabe, Baby Kochamma and so on. What is it that makes these characters so unforgettable? They’re not all good, or likeable. How do we build characters readers care about? In this workshop we will be looking at some of the different ways to find our characters, how to make them credible and complex, and the tools we have to show them to our readers. The workshop will be led by Laura Wilkinson. Laura has published seven novels for adults (two under a pseudonym) and numerous short stories. These novels are That Night in New York, which came out in September 2024 published by Serendipity, the new romance imprint at Legend Times, Crossing the Line, The Family Line, Redemption Song and Skin Deep. Crossing the Line was a Welsh Books Council book of the month and Skin Deep was longlisted for Not the Booker prize. Alongside writing, she runs workshops on craft and has spoken at literary events nationwide. For more than twelve years, she’s worked as a creative writing tutor for organisations including New Writing South and on the MA programme at West Dean. She is also a structural editor and mentor, coaching writers to competition short listings and publication. The session will be held at the Jubilee Library in Brighton and will run from 11-5pm with an hour for lunch. The venue is wheelchair accessible, near the train station and bus routes and with plenty of options for lunch – including bringing your own. The workshop is part of a series of one-day masterclasses held this Easter. They are open to existing students on the Creative Writing Programme and other writers looking to improve specific areas of their writing craft. You can book onto as many workshops as you choose. The Easter masterclasses run from 10-4pm each day (except the one on Sunday 6th April because of the library's opening hours): • Friday 4th April – Managing Pace: Beth Miller (in-person in the Jubilee Library,Brighton) £75 including VAT. • Saturday 5th April – Boosting your creativity: Roy McFarlane (in-person in the Jubilee Library, Brighton) £75 including VAT • Sunday 6th April – Creating memorable characters: Laura Wilkinson (in-person in the Jubilee Library, Brighton) £75 including VAT • Saturday 12th April: Placemaking – creating great places: Rosie Chard (online) £65 including VAT • Sunday13th April: Imagery, Symbolism and Metaphor in Prose – John McCullough (online) £65 including VAT First year students on the Creative Writing Programme and Life Writing Programme receive two free masterclasses a year. My friends who study in the local area told me that this Jubilee Library is their favorite for international students, because the seats are very comfortable, the overall environment is also very good, the lighting is sufficient, the sun can shine in, and the environment is very good. The collection volume is also very rich.

We were there on a weekend and mainly walked outside, looking at the gardens and the architecture. We didn&rsquo;t go inside as their hours of operation didn&rsquo;t coincide with the time we were there and had available. Great place to stroll, people watch, or have a picnic, weather permitting.

Had my first date here with my partner and we hadthe best time. An amazing aquarium with abeautiful atmosphere, lights and gorgeouscreatures! I love animals and fish and seeing themhere was wonderful. Staff were lovely and veryknowledgeable. The place was clean, easy tonavigate and extremely ambient and beautiful. We went on a Thursday afternoon so was pretty quiet!

One of the best piers in the South of England. There is lots to do with tons of seaside rides, fun arcade games and food. Highly recommend catching the sunset here and if you&rsquo;re lucky you might catch the starlings dancing at dusk, I didn&rsquo;t know they do this and it was the most spectacular striking and stunning natural phenomenon I had seen, it was mesmerising. Highest chances of seeing the starlings dance is between November-March, we visited in early March

more like a downtown touristy place with many cafes and cosmetic shops. very easy to get lost while looking for some place on maps. almost did when i was lookong for Mac cosmetics...you will find Jo Malone, Bobby Brown and Mac cosmetics all in one small area. and coffee shops too. on my second attempt i was looking for pizza express and i almost missed it. hehehh the lanes is one place that gets you wondering what exactly is going on with your maps application. definately recomend you to not miss it while in brighton. on your way to lanes you will meet Tmax the famous brand discount shop and boy, you will thank me then.
