Hotels near St James＇ Church, Parkham

I always try and book a pre Xmas stay somewhere, with my children . I came across Woodford Bridge on a booking site , and it seemed to offer great value for money so I thought why not. There are some positives and negatives which I ll list below. Arrived on a dark and gloomy Tues evening, the roads are not particularly great , potholes galore in the area. In the dark its quite scary roads too, in the middle of nowhere !! Check in was straightforward, nice friendly staff , however I found they have a tendency to talk amongst themselves and leave you waiting for too long before saying ” can I help you ”? Apartment was very clean , modern and warm. Incredibly happy with the size of it. Easy location to the games room for my boys, which they enjoyed very much, the pool table and table tennis. However the lighting is not great around the steps , and also the warning paint on edges of steps have worn off , so I had to be very careful walking back to apt in the dark. Used swimming facilities , nice , clean , quiet . The other facilities looked good . Went to the pub on site one night. Lovely little place , although totally devoid of atmosphere, hopefully better at weekend when live music on. They definitely need something. Prices of wine extortionate 175ml for 7.25 . I had to contact reception as the seal around the oven was coming off, did this in the morning before we went to atlantic village. On our return it was still hanging off, so had to contact reception again. Although I really liked the apt , there are a couple of improvements needed I feel. Firstly I could not find a chopping board or fish slice in the kitchen. As a single female with 2 children I also did nt feel safe as the apts can be accessed by anyone , there needs to be a key card reader on the entrance to the block , not just the apt door. Overall , it was a nice enough stay but I Don t think we d return. Probably much nicer in the Summer , and more going on in the area

A group of seven walking friends recently stayed at this delightful, partly 13th century, thatched country inn for a week. First of all, the rooms. They were clean, quiet and well-designed, with comfortable beds, and with mattresses that felt like they were new (maybe they were). Each room also had a well-functioning shower (and some rooms had baths too), plenty of storage space, and replenished tea and coffee-making facilities – including the good-quality biscuits – every day. One friend said that it was the best hotel shower he’d ever had. The residents’ lounge was also really comfortable and handy for a group like ours. And then there’s the food. The breakfast menu was the most extensive I’ve ever seen in a hotel, with options of the usual full (veggie) English breakfast, eggs, cereals, yoghurts etc. but also omelette, pancake, porridge with fresh berry compote, fresh fruit salad and more. Every day the chefs prepared for each of us a most delicious sandwich, filled with a filling of our choice, taken from a wide range of options. One friend (not the same one who loved the shower!) said it was the best sandwiches they’d ever had. After the first day the staff even asked us what filling we would like in order to ensure we would each get a variety throughout the week. Initially we booked for dinner for just the first two nights, but the food was so good that we ate there all seven nights of our stay. Between us we tried practically everything on the main and dessert menu and there was not one occasion when anyone was disappointed with the food they were served. The hotel also serves a range of high-quality wines, beers/ales and a variety of gins. It was lovely too to have a little section of the room with a large table just for ourselves for dinner. Whether you are a walker or a tourist visiting the local sights, the location is superb. For walkers and runners, there is a path directly from the hotel car park down to the southwest coastal path. From there the walks in either direction are absolutely stunning. Usually we did a circular walk, sometimes returning partly inland. Other times we did a linear walk and caught the bus back. The bus stops directly outside the hotel. Clovelly, Appledore, Westward Ho!, Instow, Hartland and Hartland Quay as well as other beautiful places are all just a walk/short drive away. But what stands out the most is the staff. Every single member of staff – the managers/owners James and Becca, front-of-house bar/waiting staff Anna, Olivia, Millie and Sarah, chefs Dave and Will, and housekeepers Sharon and Jan – was approachable, helpful, friendly and attentive. And every single one of them was very well trained, which led to extremely efficient customer service and a consistently pleasant customer experience, from our first contact with the hotel to make the initial enquiry and then booking to the personalised service throughout our stay to the fact that they got all of our bills correct at the end. We always stay at this comfortable and very friendly historical hotel by the river in Bideford. The staff are lovely and nothing seems to be too much trouble for them. The food is very good and everywhere is spotlessly clean. There seems to be a quietly ongoing programme of refurbishment with the restaurant and Palm Court room being recently completed to a high standard. We have stayed here in all seasons now and can say it’s warm and cosy even in February. The hotel’s own car parks are also very convenient and the same goes for the lift within the hotel. The hotel’s history, dating back in parts from 1688, is quirky and fascinating with a particular feature being the first floor Charles Kingsley lounge where we like relaxing with a drink or afternoon tea. Another highlight of our stays is to hear more historical detail about this characterful old hotel from Steve and Dee, the friendly housekeepers, and for us this really does add to the all-round enjoyable experience of staying here.

Our stay at the Royal was just what we hoped for after a very long day travelling. Our room and meal at 62 The Bank and breakfast were all excellent and we will definitely stay again if we are ever in Barnstaple. Thanks again and see you soon hopefully Rob and Margaret
