Don't let your kids wander off during summer vacation! 8 amazing routes to explore thoroughly for around 3,000 yuan per person.
For summer family trips, don’t just flock to popular cities. Some places are just 2 hours away by high-speed train, with fewer crowds, cooler weather, lower costs, and a richer experience. This time, I’ve connected 8 underrated small towns and natural areas into one route, featuring local life, grassland adventures, and secret canyons. Each spot keeps your budget in check, so traveling with kids is easy and fun.
01 Kaifeng | Henan
⏰ At 5 PM, when the heat has mostly faded, head straight to Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden with the kids. Skip the two-hour daytime lines for this popular spot. After dusk, lanterns light up the park, and when the water stage drums start, kids’ eyes light up.
⚠️ Weekends in summer are busy, so it’s best to visit Monday through Thursday to save enough on tickets for a milk tea. The next morning, visit Iron Pagoda Park. The glazed pagoda shines under the sun. Climb to the top for a view of the old city. The steps aren’t steep, so both elderly and kids can manage.
📍 Outside Daxiangguo Temple, there’s an alley with a lamb flatbread shop that’s been open for 30 years. Freshly baked, crispy, and fragrant, one large flatbread costs only 10 yuan. The Bao Gong Memorial Hall is nearby and can be toured in an hour. Kids get fascinated listening to Bao Gong stories.
🚄 It’s only a 30-minute high-speed train ride from Zhengzhou East Station. Stay near Gulou in a guesthouse for under 200 yuan a night.
02 Haibei | Qinghai
⏰ In late July, the grasslands under the Qilian Mountains turn golden. Skip the overhyped Menyuan and drive deeper into the mountains. The water in Heihe Grand Canyon is so clear you can see the bottom. Kids can splash barefoot, shivering from the cold.
⚠️ The sun is strong on the grasslands, so don’t skimp on sunscreen and hats. The breeze carries the scent of grass, making it a hundred times more comfortable than city air conditioning. At the foot of Lenglongling Mountain, herders set up tents where you can drink freshly made yak yogurt. It’s thick and sour; kids might frown and add extra sugar.
📍 On the dirt road at the entrance of Amindongso Scenic Area, you can see wild rabbits hopping at dusk. The whole valley is filled only with wind and bird calls. This is the quiet, wild fun a summer family trip should have.
🚄 Rent a car from Xining for a 2-hour drive. Fuel and tolls cost less than 150 yuan total. Book a guesthouse in the autonomous prefecture in advance for just over 100 yuan, including breakfast.
03 Baoding | Hebei
⏰ At noon in August, after leaving Qingxi Mausoleum, head into the valleys of Yesanpo, where the temperature drops by 5 degrees. On the glass plank road at Baishi Mountain, kids hold your hand tightly in fear. But at the pavilion halfway up, the mountain breeze blows from all directions, instantly drying your sweat.
⚠️ Food inside Baishi Mountain Scenic Area is expensive and not tasty. Bring your own rice balls and fruit. The money saved can buy two cable car tickets. At Baiyangdian in Anxin, the reed marshes are less crowded after 4 PM. Boatmen row the oars and pick lotus pods for you to eat. Kids get their hands sticky peeling them.
📍 In Yesanpo town, the “Old Courtyard” farmhouse restaurant stews free-range chicken with a savory flavor. One portion is enough for a family of three and costs only 60 yuan.
🚄 It’s a one-hour high-speed train ride from Beijing West Station. Stay at a budget hotel near the scenic area entrance for 150 yuan even in peak season.
04 Zhenjiang | Jiangsu
⏰ Best visited in autumn, but summer is fine too. At 5:30 AM, the path in front of Jinshan Temple is empty. The river breeze blows, making it feel fresh.
📍 After Jinshan, walk to Jiaoshan. Take a ferry across the river from the dock. Kids lean over the boat watching water birds, excited beyond words. The stone steps at Beigu Mountain are steep. If you have a stroller, you’ll have to carry it up and down, so it’s better to stop halfway at the pavilion and enjoy the river breeze. Maoshan in Jurong is cooler. The mountain path goes through the forest, shaded from the sun. Kids imitate Taoist bows, making everyone laugh.
⚠️ Zhenjiang vinegar ribs must be freshly made. Try them at “Lao Yanchun” for 32 yuan a portion. The sweet and sour ribs with bones will have kids eating half a bowl of rice.
🚄 It’s a 20-minute high-speed train ride from Nanjing South Station. Stay at an inn inside Xijindu, where the lanterns light up at night, like stepping back in time.
05 Liuzhou | Guangxi
⏰ At 6 PM, when the lights along the Liu River come on, the river breeze carries the sour smell of snail noodles. Kids pinch their noses and say it stinks but soon beg to try it.
📍 Take the water bus from Dongmen Dock for 1 yuan to the opposite bank. It’s more fun than a taxi, and kids count the bridges. At Chengyang Eight Villages’ wind and rain bridge, it’s coolest after 4 PM. Elders sit in the bridge corridor fanning themselves, while kids chase ducks along the field paths.
⚠️ Don’t buy the five-color glutinous rice at tourist stalls in the village. Walk further in to find an old lady steaming fresh bowls for 5 yuan each. It’s sticky and fragrant.
🚄 It’s a one-hour high-speed train ride from Guilin. Stay near Yaobu Ancient Town. For 200 yuan, you can find a river view room with a balcony and watch the fountain show at night.
06 Ganzi | Sichuan
⏰ Summer is the most comfortable time to visit Ganzi, especially Xinduqiao. In the morning, when the fog clears, the lake at Mugecuo looks like a mirror. Kids squat by the lake throwing small stones to skip. When tired, they lie on the grass watching clouds.
⚠️ At over 3,000 meters elevation, don’t rush with kids. Walk slowly, drink plenty of water, and take Rhodiola for two days before the trip.
📍 Drive from Xinduqiao to Daocheng Yading, passing the Sela Grassland. There’s no entrance fee. Wildflowers stretch to the horizon. Kids pick dandelions and blow seeds all over their faces. The glacier at Hailuogou loses sunlight after 4 PM. It’s brightest around 10 AM. The ice tongue glows blue under the sun. Kids wear down jackets but still shiver.
🚄 Hire a car from Chengdu. Split among seven people, it costs just over 200 yuan per person, including the driver who also guides.
07 Taizhou | Zhejiang
⏰ At 6 AM, the fog on Tiantai Mountain hasn’t lifted. The trail is quiet except for birdsong and footsteps. Kids run ahead, stepping in dew-soaked shoes without complaint.
🍜 At the foot of the mountain, “Guoqing Temple vegetarian meal” costs 8 yuan per person. The stewed dried tofu is fragrant, and kids drink two bowls of porridge. The hanging bridge at Shenxianju scares timid adults, but kids laugh and cross easily, even filming videos to show neighbors. Enter Taizhou Prefecture Cultural Tourism Area through Xingshan Gate. Walk down Ziyang Street to find freshly baked seaweed cakes, sweet and savory, 3 yuan each. Kids eat them messily.
⚠️ Summer afternoons are hot. It’s smartest to finish touring the ancient city before 10 AM.
🚄 It’s a one-hour high-speed train ride from Ningbo. Stay at a chain hotel outside Linhai Ancient City North Gate for just over 100 yuan a night.
08 Daxing’anling | Heilongjiang
⏰ At the end of July, in Beiji Village, you can still read road signs at 9 PM. The sun sets late, and the long daylight lets you play for 7 to 8 hours. Kids see the “midnight sun” for the first time and are so excited they don’t want to sleep.
📍 Wear a windbreaker and walk 2 km into the forest. Black birch and larch trees block the sun, and the temperature drops to just over 20 degrees, more comfortable than air conditioning.
⚠️ Mosquitoes in Daxing’anling are big and fierce. Don’t skimp on mosquito patches and long pants. The pine forest humidity makes skin smooth. Kids pick blueberries by the roadside, staining their fingers purple-red while eating as they walk.
🚄 Get off at Mohe Station and hire a local driver with a minivan for 100 yuan a day, including fuel. They can also take you to the reindeer tribe hidden in the mountains.
