The wine list was interesting and wide-ranging too: we chose a characterful Spanish viognier-viura which went well with everything we had. Every element was delicious; some of the standouts were the exquisite trio of amuse-bouche (nibbles of salmon roe, pressed belly pork and tiny cheese tartelettes), wonderful brioche and sourdough breads with cod mousse in herb puree and cultured and lovage butters; hen-of-the-woods tempura with cep custard. That gives an idea of the adventurousness and attention to detail; every element was pitch-perfect. Staff were delightful, perfectly attentive and never intrusive. The restaurant was more like a works canteen, with no atmosphere, no decor, no real wine choice. Just large with many tables laid with cutlery and glasses. For what it was, the cost of £20 per person was reasonable. The bar server allowed us to sample the wine as he had no idea what it was and there was no wine list. However, the breakfast served in the same restaurant was of better quality and a very good choice. We were disappointed that the porridge was 'make your own with hot water', which we've never bought ourselves and wouldn't expect in a restaurant!The Victoria Oxshott
