For a resort that starts at ~$2,000/night this place falls very short in various areas. For an all inclusive resort there were very few dining options (it was either the sur house or the pool side bar). Most of the staff were really friendly but we did feel like the housekeeping staff weren’t too professional at times (once they opened the door to our room even when we told them to give us a few seconds to get to the door). Although the resort is in a beautiful location, I don’t know if I would consider this place luxurious.

We had tried for a few years to book a trip to Alila Ventana Big Sur as it came highly recommended by a family member that is a travel consultant. We were finally able to get a reservation in July 2026. We were astounded by the beauty of the property and the surrounding red woods, genuinely lovely staff that were always kind and pleasant and the food was over the top fantastic! Each meal we enjoyed was better than the last. Quality, taste and presentation all 5 star. The spa team was incredible and our massages were some of the best we've had. We highly recommend this property and sincerely hope they continue doing what they are doing because they have it figured out! Kudos to all staff and management, well done! We miss Alila Ventana Big Sur already and hope we have the opportunity to visit again!

The property is beautiful and dining was top-notch. Our room's balcony overlooks the hills and forest, which was amazing. The outdoor Japanese hot bath was very relaxing. We signed up for a couple of add-on activities - cold-pressed soap-making and dive into the beehive - both of which were very enjoyable. The only blip we encountered was the incorrect charge on our final bill, which we had to go back and have it corrected.

I used 90k Hyatt points for a two-night stay. Since meals were included, I think a 3-star rating is fair. If I had paid cash, it would definitely be a 1-star stay. From check-in there were problems. Then the toilet was broken, and even after one repair attempt it still didn’t work—someone had to come again late at night and spent more than half an hour. We were also woken up by a knock late night because room service delivered the neighboring room’s order to our room by mistake. There was no bottled water provided; we had to walk quite a distance to refill it ourselves. To top it off, the final billing was incorrect. Big Sur is really nice, but that’s not because of the hotel. The only thing I can genuinely praise is how quickly they responded via text message. If you plan to pay cash, I think Post Ranch Inn is much better—service, views, everything.

I almost never leave negative reviews, but after reading so many glowing ones before booking, I feel like I owe future guests an honest perspective. We chose this resort because it’s considered one of Hyatt’s flagship luxury properties. We also redeemed a huge number of World of Hyatt points to stay here because we thought it would be an unforgettable experience. Looking back, I deeply regret using them. Those points could have gone toward several incredible stays elsewhere, and I left wishing I’d saved them. Our first impression wasn’t great. The arrival process was confusing, no one was at valet, and two staff members walked right past us without acknowledging us or offering help. After check-in, we were simply handed a map instead of being shown to our room or even given a quick orientation. For a resort charging over $2,000 a night, it felt surprisingly impersonal. The biggest disappointment was the pool. We spent over eight hours at the pool and pool bar over two days. Not once did a server, bartender, or pool attendant come over to ask if we needed anything. Meanwhile, I watched staff regularly check on other guests throughout the day. Whether intentional or not, we consistently felt overlooked. The pool area also wasn’t being maintained. Dirty towels, dishes, and glasses sat around for hours—long enough for ants to show up. We ended up clearing our own chairs and putting up our own umbrella while staff members watched without offering to help. Then there were the towels. Before going to the pool, I even called the front desk to make sure towels would be available. When we got there, there weren’t any. I asked at least five different employees for towels. Three simply told me they were out. No one offered another solution, and no one ever followed up. Over two hours later, we still didn’t have towels, even though I watched another couple have some brought to them. Eventually, a whole bag of towels finally showed up around 7:30 p.m. The drinks at the pool bar were honestly pretty underwhelming, and every time I ordered it felt like I was inconveniencing the bartenders. On the positive side, the food was genuinely good—especially the chips, salsa, and guacamole. Dinner at The Sur House was another letdown. We had an 8:45 reservation (the only available even though we were overnight guests) but weren’t seated until around 9:20. No apology. No acknowledgment of the delay. Nothing. The appetizers were great, but the entrées and desserts were just okay, especially the steak. After dinner, we asked both our server and the host to call a shuttle back to our room because the gravel paths were rough in heels. We were assured several would be waiting outside. There weren’t any. After standing outside in the cold, we went back in and found staff who seemed unsure what to do. Eventually, I had to text the concierge myself because six guests were waiting for transportation. Fifteen minutes later, a regular passenger vehicle showed up instead of

This was the BEST, most relaxing vacation! We were celebrating our 33rd wedding anniversary and found that it was easy to check out of our busy work lives and be present in the beauty of nature. This resort is nestled in the redwoods and you really feel like you're away from it all. The views are spectacular, the room was lovely and cozy, the service was amazing and the food was SO good!! Such a great variety and we could have eaten all day if we had the room! ;) The staff is absolutely incredible, as well! Would 1000% recommend this Alila Ventana Big Sur!!

Amazing experience. Staff met every expectation. This place sets the stands that other hotels should meet but none do.

Location is honestly a little off from Carmel by the sea downtown area. But once you are in the Alila resort, everything is in there, nothing needs to be done outside. Short hiking, food, pool, spa, service were absolutely amazing. Food was beyond my expectation. Since it was adult only resort, very quiet ambience was great.

Alila Ventana Big Sur has long been an aspirational Hyatt/Chase redemption, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. The setting is absolutely beautiful, and highlights include the Meadow Pool, solid food at Sur House, and cozy in-room features like the fireplace, tub, and hammock. However, the experience felt inconsistent and underwhelming for the price point. Service was the biggest issue. Dining at Sur House was extremely slow (often 2+ hours, even when not busy), and one dinner reservation was mishandled badly enough to impact the rest of our stay. Pool service was minimal, activity booking was disorganized, and there was little proactive hospitality overall. The room itself was nice, but lacked attention to detail—cheap robes, basic toiletries, minor maintenance issues, and scaled-back touches (like no more in-room s’mores) made it feel less luxurious. Even small moments, like the lack of acknowledgment of a birthday celebration, stood out at this level. Bottom line: Stunning setting, but service, consistency, and value don’t justify the cost or points in its current state
