Tropical wooden cabin. Just a heads-up, it's a two-story building with no elevator. The facilities are very well-maintained, and the kitchen is great. The balcony is super comfortable, and the neighborhood is very quiet. At night, you'll hear frogs and insects, and during the day, birdsong. It's very close to the beach, just a 5-minute walk to get into the water. Be aware that there aren't many places to eat or drink nearby, so you'll need to stock up beforehand. If you plan to do laundry, make sure to get coins from the front desk upon arrival. The front desk closes after 5:30 PM. The owner is a very nice Vietnam War veteran. There's also a very friendly cat at the property. This place really gives you a taste of local life.

Not very recommended. Basically just a place to sleep. Because the trip was in a hurry, there were no options. It is recommended that you book in advance as there will be more and better hotels.

Stayed in the “dorm style” room. The common kitchen and living area was well stocked. There were dishes, different cooking implements, microwave, pots and pans in the kitchen. Each private room has a small fridge and a private bathroom. The AC was cold. When I stayed, I think there was only one other person in the dorm but I only heard them when they came in. I could not hear them in their room. My room had a glass slider to the grassy yard in front. Siobhan (front desk clerk) was friendly and communicated through messages about check-in before my stay. Check-in was quick. Facility was busy during my stay but my room was located away from the action and very quiet. This will be my usual stay when I’m in Hilo.

I am very disappointed with my experience at Arnott’s Lodge. After checking out, I discovered that several of my personal cosmetic items were missing from my room. While I understand that hotels cannot always be responsible for every lost item, I expected a more professional and caring approach when reporting the incident. This experience has left me feeling disappointed and concerned about the security of guests’ personal belongings.
I hope the management will improve its lost-and-found procedures and customer service to prevent similar situations from happening to future guests.
