Fairmont Peace Hotel on the Bund

Came with the kids to experience old Shanghai! The hotel was better than I expected, not as old as I thought it would be. It's that kind of old that's very well-maintained. The service was excellent. The area outside the hotel was very lively. Breakfast was good too.

Our final stop on our Shanghai trip with the kids was the iconic Peace Hotel, a historic building steeped in a hundred years of grandeur. Stepping into the lobby, you're immediately struck by its profound and elegant atmosphere, an old Shanghai charm that no modern hotel can replicate. What truly touched us was the genuine warmth and enthusiasm from every single staff member, from the front desk lady's gentle smile to the concierge's thoughtful assistance and even the cleaning lady's friendly greetings – it made us feel incredibly welcome. The complimentary historical and cultural tour of the Peace Museum was the perfect finishing touch. After breakfast, listening quietly to the stories of the building's past and present was the ideal way to cap off our wonderful journey.

This was our second stay after three years, and it still felt like coming home. From the greeters to the front desk, the concierge for luggage storage, and the staff on the ninth floor, everyone was professional and dedicated. I was especially touched when I mentioned to a chef how much I missed the sesame paste from three years ago – I said it casually, but he took it to heart. He specially prepared a bowl of sesame paste just for me. The Peace Hotel is not just a historic building; its attention to service details truly earns the praise of every guest.

The historic Fairmont Peace Hotel, built in 1929 by the British-Jewish businessman Victor Sassoon, holds a special place in history. It's where Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling got engaged, and where Lu Xun hosted Charlie Chaplin. Countless celebrities have graced its rooms. Previously, the Peace Hotel comprised both North and South buildings and was once known as the 'First Building in the Far East,' an iconic landmark on the Bund. I was incredibly fortunate to stay here this time, a truly immersive and delightful experience. Step out, and you're greeted by the architectural wonders of the Bund and the observation deck offering stunning views of Pudong. Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street is right at the doorstep. The location is absolutely superb. The hotel also houses a small museum, which feels more like an exhibition hall, with regular guided tours. A magnificent glass peace dove with outstretched wings dominates the center of the lobby. Despite its century-old history, the hotel boasts comprehensive and modern facilities. Every corner of the hotel is picturesque, perfect for photos. All the staff were warm and polite, providing very thoughtful service. However, there was a minor lapse when the concierge staff placed my checked luggage on the floor. The hotel's ambiance is fantastic. I requested a high-floor room overlooking Nanjing Road during check-in and was assigned a room on the 7th floor, also facing Nanjing Road, which offered excellent views. Lying in bed at night, I could admire the Nanjing Road nightscape. Perfect! The package also included drinks and snacks at the Cathay Room on the top floor. After discussing with the hotel, we opted to exchange it for a performance at the Jazz Bar. An 80+-year-old jazz band performs there nightly, accompanied by a resident singer. We were given two complimentary drinks – one cocktail and one juice – along with chicken wings and peanuts. Listening to jazz, enjoying a drink, and munching on snacks was pure bliss. The room perfectly blends classic and modern styles, with comprehensive amenities. The bathroom was huge, and there was a walk-in closet and a very large bathtub. The bed was super-sized, with soft and comfortable bedding. The room was spotlessly clean, and the toiletries were all high-quality. Before we returned to the room in the evening, the staff had already prepared it for bedtime. Welcome fruits and exquisite chocolates were also thoughtfully provided in the room. They were so beautiful, I almost didn't want to eat them! The in-room coffee bar offers complimentary coffee, while the mini-bar items are chargeable. After enjoying the jazz, returning to the room for a relaxing shower and a good night's sleep was simply wonderful. So happy! Breakfast was served at the Jasmine Restaurant on the first floor. The East-meets-West buffet offered an incredibly rich selection, with what felt like nearly a hundred different dishes. There was so much food, I almost couldn't try everything. Upon being seated, the server brought a cup of coffee and a pot of tea. In the end, I piled my table high with food and savored each bite. I ate so much I could barely walk out – utterly satisfying! Leaving the hotel, I felt quite reluctant to go.

I've always wanted to stay at this hotel, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The location is superb, right on the Bund. The staff's service attitude was thoughtful and made us feel right at home.

When you're tired from exploring, it's so convenient to pop back to the hotel for a rest before heading out again. You simply won't find another location like it. 🏨 **Immersive Republican Era Ambiance** The moment you step into the lobby, you're transported back to old Shanghai! Marble pillars, vintage carvings, creaky wooden floors, and even the hallway lighting evoke a sense of history. The hotel also features a small historical museum, where you can see many old artifacts and hear stories from the staff about the past. That profound sense of history is truly touching. We stayed in a river-view room, which maintained a retro decor but with all modern facilities. The bedding was plush, and the toiletries had a luxurious scent. 💁 **Heartwarming Service** I mentioned it was my birthday when I called ahead to book, and the front desk staff, Minie Chen, upgraded our room for free and even gave us a handwritten card and a small cake. The bellhop kindly carried our luggage to the room, and even the security guards at the entrance would greet us warmly. Lisa Zhou was so sweet and gentle, and her food recommendations were delicious. The night manager, Roger Wang, was absolutely fantastic – his voice was lovely, and his service was incredibly attentive and warm. Billy Liang at the front desk was also superb and made us feel so welcome. As someone who appreciates details, I was thoroughly impressed. In the morning, the room was immaculately cleaned by the staff, and in the evening, they thoughtfully prepared turn-down service. It was incredibly considerate. 🎷 **Must-Try Signature Experiences** ▫️ **The Jazz Bar is a must-visit!** Every night, there's a jazz band with musicians who've been performing for decades. Sitting here with a cocktail, gazing at the Bund's night view, you can almost imagine yourself as a character in a movie – the atmosphere is absolutely captivating. ▫️ **The breakfast at the Ground Floor's Nine Nations Restaurant offers an incredible selection.** The freshly made local noodles are absolutely divine. The auntie making the noodles, knowing it was my birthday, specially added eggs, spare ribs, beef, shrimp, and greens to my bowl. Such a rich and delicious 'longevity noodle' was a truly special experience. For the 8th-floor restaurant, you need to book a window table several days in advance to get the full dining experience. The portions are generous, and the food is excellent. I couldn't finish the whole chunk of Chongming lamb ribs, so I packed them to go and finished them at midnight in my room. Both hot and cold, they tasted fantastic! My birthday was truly wonderful, thanks to every staff member at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. The room was clean and comfortable. The front desk and concierge, Rovvin, provided excellent, thoughtful, and enthusiastic service, helping us with many travel arrangements. The breakfast was rich and delicious. This is an excellent hotel that I would highly recommend.
