I am extremely disappointed with my experience at Kempinski Hotel Chongqing. For a property that presents itself as a five-star hotel, the standard of service I experienced was unacceptable.
At approximately 4:30 AM, I was still dealing with an air-conditioning system that would not provide cooling in my room. When I contacted the night staff for assistance, instead of being offered a proper solution, I was given a FAN. To make matters worse, the fan was simply left in my room for me to figure out and set up myself in the middle of the night!
When I spoke to Mr. Leo, the duty manager, he explained that the hotel uses a central air-conditioning system and does not provide cooling during winter.
Seriously? If a hotel cannot provide cooling because of its seasonal HVAC settings, guests should be informed before booking or checking in. Guests paying for a five-star experience should not have to discover this limitation in the middle of the night and then be expected to accept a fan as an adequate substitute.
What disappointed me even more was the handling of my complaint. Rather than focusing on finding a satisfactory solution, the duty manager’s apparent concern was that I should not mention his name in my review. This left me questioning the hotel’s attitude towards accountability and guest feedback.
The fan was not even properly set up for me. I was essentially left to deal with the situation myself at 4:30 AM, when I should have been sleeping comfortably in a hotel room I had paid for.
The ONLY positive aspect of my experience was the lady who checked me in. She was genuinely kind and welcoming, and she deserves credit for her professionalism. Unfortunately, the rest of the experience was a complete letdown.
A five-star hotel is not defined by its interiors, expensive furniture, or branding. It is defined by how it treats its guests, especially when something goes wrong. Offering a fan because the central air conditioning cannot provide cooling is disappointing enough; leaving a guest to set it up independently in the middle of the night is simply unacceptable.
I expected comfort, professionalism, and genuine hospitality. Instead, I received excuses and a makeshift solution that fell far below my expectations.
Management seriously needs to review its air-conditioning policy, guest communication, and staff training. Guests deserve to know about significant limitations before booking, and complaints should be handled with professionalism and accountability.
One star. The only reason I can acknowledge anything positive about this stay is the kindness of the lady who checked me in. Otherwise, this has been an extremely disappointing experience.
