We never imagined we would say this, but this is the first Aman experience we did not entirely fall in love with.m Three important contexts shaped our stay at Amanpulo. (i) Timing, we visited during one of the busiest periods, with the resort operating at or near full occupancy. This may well explain some of what we observed. At Aman’s level, personalization and intuitive attentiveness are not luxuries — they are the defining hallmarks. During our stay, however, these felt diluted. Some facilities we consider essential — such as the steam room and cold plunge — were fully booked for days, making access impossible. Moments of “surprise and delight,” which at this tier of hospitality should feel instinctive rather than exceptional, were largely absent. The simple magic of, “we noticed you enjoyed this yesterday,” never quite materialized. Minor yet recurring lapses — in housekeeping, breakfast orders, and internal communications — occurred over three consecutive days. Individually small, collectively noticeable. (ii) The team. Many of the people we encountered are relatively new to the resort, at least by Aman standards. And yet, this is where our optimism lies. Every interaction revealed promise — receptiveness to feedback, genuine warmth, and a growing affection for the brand. Aman is not merely a set of SOPs; it is a philosophy rooted in storytelling and intuition, in making guests feel understood rather than serviced. That depth cannot be trained overnight. If this is a teething phase, the foundations are certainly there for something exceptional to re-emerge. (iii) The casitas. They remain immaculate and timeless in design. However, thoughtful modernization is essential. Navigating light switches and temperature controls in the dark feels at odds with contemporary expectations; integrated tablet controls would significantly elevate the in-room experience. We understand enhancements are already in motion — another promising sign for the resort’s next chapter. And yet, what makes this reflection nuanced — we genuinely cherished much of our time on the island. Conversations with the team felt authentic and unfiltered. We caught glimpses of island life, of both its beauty and its challenges, which made the experience feel meaningful rather than manufactured. The activities were superb, and the natural setting remains utterly singular — serene, cinematic, and profoundly special. Amanpulo is still a place we would recommend to anyone seeking something extraordinary. As for us, we may well return — but next time, we would choose a quieter season, when the full poetry of Aman can once again be felt without restraint.
