I chose COMO Maalifushi after multiple stays at its sister property, COMO Cocoa Island, wanting to visit the south, eat well, and stay on land this time. That decision, and the food, did not disappoint. COMO Shambhala Cuisine is genuinely healthy and creative, and the atmosphere of Thaa Atoll's only resort is exactly what I was hoping for: minimal boat traffic, no other hotels in sight, and peace and quiet in the middle of the Indian Ocean. I stayed for a week in July, and the weather was perfect the entire time. I'll start with the honest part. I began my stay in a Beach Suite, and at check-in found a dead gecko in the toilet bowl and trash on the beach. I requested to move, and the team relocated me to a Beach Villa, which turned out to be the better fit for what I'd come there for anyway: direct (clean) beach access, sunset views, a larger villa, and being on land rather than over water. Even after moving, attention to detail during daily cleaning was inconsistent. I found gecko droppings left on the dining table after housekeeping had already been through, trash sat in front of my villa for several days in a row, and on one occasion a dirty towel wasn't replaced and was simply hung back up for me to use again. But where they lacked, they also made up for it in other ways. I want to note the seaplane transfer. The flight runs close to an hour, and my personal limit is closer to 40 minutes. Being tall, I'm sensitive to a cramped cabin and the loud engine noise, so I asked if there was any alternative. COMO and the Manta Air team arranged for me, along with other passengers, to travel on an executive seaplane primarily used for The Nautilus. I'm genuinely grateful for how seriously they took that request. In addition to that lovely arrival and departure, what made the stay memorable, was the people. Two gentlemen in F&B, Aseel and Hassan, recognized me from my stay at JOALI Being two years ago. I actually had a photo with staff from that trip, and Aseel was in it. We updated the photo on the spot, and there's something so beautiful and special about being remembered like that. Walking from the pool to lunch one day, I was surprised to see Anura, who works the bar at COMO Cocoa Island. After more than four stays there, you get to know the staff on a small island, and he happened to be covering a few days of higher occupancy at Maalifushi while I was there. I was equally also happy to reconnect with April, who moved from Cocoa Island's spa to Maalifushi's, and who returned from her own vacation partway through my stay. Even a brief catch-up was heartfelt and overdue. I'm often traveling solo, so I make a point of talking with staff wherever I go, asking how they're doing, what they enjoy about the island, what their life is like there. So many people at COMO Maalifushi made that easy and were genuinely warm: Niaz, Mode (Marine), Brooke (Tropic Surf), Elaine (Marine), Vetris (Spa), Jahid (F&B), Rini (F&B), Almaas, Susi, and my villa host Sha
