Mercer Hotel Barcelona

I stayed at Mercer Hotel Barcelona with my daughter and left deeply disappointed. As someone who travels frequently and has stayed in many hotels around the world, I found the difference between this hotel’s reputation and the actual experience quite striking. The location is excellent, and the breakfast was genuinely good. Unfortunately, these were the only aspects that met our expectations. The rooftop “pool” is actually a very small plunge pool rather than a proper swimming pool. The area was unpleasant and poorly maintained, with pigeons constantly gathering around it and visible bird droppings. Our Deluxe Double Room felt tired and urgently in need of renovation. The furniture was dated and worn, the minibar was extremely limited, and some of the bathroom floor tiles moved under our feet while we were showering. The bed linen had visible black marks, and the towels were old, worn and discoloured. None of this is acceptable in a hotel presented as a five-star luxury property. The service was equally disappointing. Considering the hotel’s difficult access, we expected someone to offer assistance with our luggage or help arrange transportation, but no such help was offered. Most of the staff came across as cold and indifferent, apart from one female employee who was genuinely kind and helpful. When a hotel charges rates in the region of €700-800€ per night, guests should reasonably expect immaculate rooms, attentive service and genuine five-star comfort. That was simply not our experience. Overall, the hotel felt closer to an average three- or four-star property. I have stayed in lower-category hotels that were far better maintained and provided much warmer service. Apart from the location and breakfast, Mercer Hotel Barcelona was a major disappointment. I would not return.
