This is one of those hotels that is so incredible that you almost do not want to give a review for fear of attracting so many people you won't be able to get a reservation yourself! My partner and I stayed here for two nights while we explored the North Shore. It was such an incredible hotel, we wish we had stayed longer and the next time we visit the area we definitely will make this hotel our home base. When making our reservation we were delighted to learn that while pets are welcome, they are limited to staying in certain rooms on the first floor and we had the option of requesting an upper floor room that was guaranteed to have been pet-free. What a haven for allergy sufferers! The hotel has the North Shore vibe but tastefully done, nothing clitchsy or touristy about the decor. It's like being in a home. Our room was spacious with high-end linens, carpet, furniture and amenities and very clean. The mattress was incredible--I can't recall when I have slept so well! Our third floor room faced the lake and had a balcony with two chairs, we could sit out there and enjoy the view and listen to the lake or keep the sliding doors open and hear the waves while in our room. The 13-person hot tub is a relaxing spa experience--be sure to sit under the waterfall and let your shoulders get a massage! The breakfast far exceeded they typical hotel free breakfast. Multiple choices for coffee and tea, and different selection of hot items every day and assorted breads and pastries (including my favorite cranberry wildrice bread! ) as well as the usual cold cerals and fruits. Best of all, the pleasant staff ensured all items were kept replenished as the morning wore on, so that those who came at the end of service still had the same full selection as those who were first in line. They also offer hot pizza, appetizers and beer for purchase in the evenings--highly recommend the chicken cordon bleu bites! We worked our way up the North Shore, staying at a different hotel each night until we arrived at Grand Marais. Another time, we'll stay here as home base and just go ahead and make the daily drive to other areas.
