This cuts out much of the long approach from Little Petra. After the 4×4 drop-off, you have roughly an hour of spectacular hiking through the mountains before reaching the Monastery. And this is where the strategy pays off. 🏛️ You see the Monastery FIRST Start early and you can reach one of Petra's most impressive monuments before most visitors coming from the main entrance have climbed all the way there. ⬇️ You go DOWN the 800 steps Instead of finishing an already long day with a huge uphill staircase, you descend toward central Petra while everyone coming the traditional way is climbing up. 👥 You move against the crowds This is probably the biggest advantage. When the main flow is heading toward the Monastery, you're leaving it. By the time they finally reach Ad Deir, you're already farther down the trail. And as you continue through Petra, you're often arriving at places after the early crowds have moved deeper into the site.
