Kasteel Engelenburg

We go to the restaurant every year when we visit the Netherlands. I reserved a table for my husband’s 75th birthday in March for the beginning of August and because I wanted our Canadian guests to have a culinary experience. Three days before the event I get an email that they tried to call me (didn’t try hard enough) and that they will be closed for summer vacation. My idea is that the chef either quit or was fired. They said that the cellar was open with a limited menu. What other choice did I have at this very late date? When we entered a young man again said we tried to call you. I said I am aware but how can such a late decision be made. No apology but a shrug of shoulders - it is what it is he said. I’ll shorten things up - no apology drink, no apology at all or extra attention to try and make it a special evening. The others thought the food was ok I thought it was terrible and had three pieces of steak with fat I could not get my knife through. At least they didn’t ruin the wine!

We booked arrangement including 4-course dinner and breakfast. Outstanding dinner with somewhat small portions. Unfortunately the Serre restaurant was nearly empty, however in return we got full attention of very kind maitre and cook with view on open kitchen. We can only recommend to go there for dinner, overnight stay, golf or walk in the forest.

Our stay at Kasteel Engelenburg was nothing short of magical. From the moment we arrived at the reception, we were greeted with warmth and sincere hospitality. The grand entrance to the castle set the tone. We were warmly welcomed with a glass of champagne, this personal touch perfectly marked the beginning of a truly special stay. The highlight of the evening was the five-course dinner at restaurant Judith. It was Michelin star worthy, beautifully presented, and scrumptious. Each course was a creative masterpiece, but the dessert truly outshone; a delicately crafted sweet creation shaped like a swan, a charming tribute to the scenic setting. It was delicious and refined. Breakfast the following morning was impressive; varied, creative, and wonderfully presented. Enjoying it with a panoramic view over the golf course. Watching the swans glide peacefully across the water, was the perfect way to end our stay. This was an exceptional experience in an incredibly beautiful and romantic castle setting. Our room was comfortable. Every element, from the warm welcome to the exquisite cuisine and scenic views combined to create an unforgettable and remarkable stay. The staff’s attentiveness was evident, and it continued throughout our entire stay. Every member of the team was professional, courteous, and eager to help, making us feel truly valued as guests. We have stayed here five times in the last three years. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are beautiful and all different. Dinner was delicious and breakfast absolutely fabulous. As was the very very nice woman serving/managing our breakfast. Late October - mid November the deciduous woodland surrounding the Hotel is absolutely stunning. Best time of the year to go for tree and autumn lovers. Herons clearly love it too! Driving thro' Gelderland is a joy and finding yourself in Kasteel Engelenburg is the icing on the cake- Just lovely! ( and we do not play Golf!)

Beautiful location in eastern part of NL wth forests, farming and old towns like Zutphen. Venue in old historical 300 years old but renovated castle. Very attentive staff. Great restaurant with view on the garden, woods and golf. Luxury room

Lovely dinner with family and friends. Never disappointed when we dine here or stay . The food is amazing and staff is incredibly attentive. Last summer spent four nights here for a family event and loved it. Beautiful setting and wonderful accommodations
