Having stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong before, what impressed me most back then was the chocolate from their pastry shop – it was absolutely delicious. This was my first time at the Mandarin Oriental in Beijing, so here are my personal impressions.
First, the hotel's location is truly a quiet oasis in the bustling city. It's incredibly convenient for getting around; the Forbidden City, National Museum of China, Tiananmen Square, and Jingshan Park are all basically within walking distance. The hotel is also very close to the Line 8 subway station, with Beijing Department Store right opposite the entrance. Wangfujing Central is just downstairs, making shopping for anything incredibly easy.
The hotel's service can only be described as meticulous. By the second day, the restaurant staff already remembered guests' names and even thoughtfully noted down any food allergies. On the day I checked in, I was a bit early, so I stored my luggage and went out. When I returned to my room in the evening, I found a warm pear soup prepared, and the wheels of my suitcase had been wiped spotless. Daily housekeeping was always promptly completed without disturbing guests. Moreover, Claudy from the front desk (I was in a hurry when I checked out, so I didn't confirm the spelling) always offered thoughtful greetings, making guests feel incredibly warm during Beijing's coldest days this winter.
I didn't get a chance to try the steakhouse this time, but since the Cantonese restaurant, Zǐ Shàn, is where breakfast is served, I tried their breakfast rice noodles and beef noodles, both of which I loved. Breakfast is semi-buffet style, and the combination of mini fried dough sticks (you tiao) and waffles was a delightful culinary surprise. There are also freshly made waffles, crispy and perfectly browned, which, paired with a latte from the 'Big Orange Cat' (dà jú māo), made the entire day very satisfying. One evening, after a bath, I suddenly craved dessert and ordered the milk jelly – it met the consistent high standards of Mandarin Oriental desserts, neither too sweet nor too rich.
Overall, it's a fantastic hotel, and I hope to have the opportunity to visit again.
