Absolutely Appalling – Not Worth the Price or the Stars This was supposed to be a much-needed overnight break for my partner and me—a chance to escape the daily grind of work and parenting and enjoy some relaxation. Unfortunately, we left wishing we had just stayed home. This was, without a doubt, the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. From the moment we stepped into our room, we were hit by an awful, musty smell—likely due to damp. The room itself was in a terrible state: wallpaper peeling off the walls, a broken door blind, and a kettle that didn’t even work. When I raised concerns about the unpleasant smell, all we were offered was a spray bottle of fabric freshener—which, unsurprisingly, did nothing. The room looked nothing like the photos online, and when we brought this up with staff, we were told it "hadn’t been redecorated yet." For the price we paid, this was absolutely unacceptable. The entire property, though part of an old estate, is completely dated and in serious need of refurbishment. Facilities were no better. The pools were tired and clearly in need of updating. We waited over 30 minutes for two cocktails at the bar, which turned out to be massively overpriced and underwhelming. The so-called two-rosette restaurant was another major letdown—the dinner was genuinely awful. Breakfast was mediocre at best, and they couldn’t even manage a basic eggs Florentine. Lunch by the pool took 45 minutes to arrive, and it was just a burger and chips. We had hoped to enjoy a relaxing evening on the terrace after dinner, but because we waited over an hour for our main course, it was already dark by the time we finished. To make things worse, the terrace had no outdoor lighting—pitch black—so we couldn't even see each other, let alone enjoy a drink or play a game of cards outside. Instead, we ended up going back to our room—only to be met again with that same awful, lingering smell and to a broken kettle. We raised our concerns during our stay and again at check-out, only to be met with a half-hearted “thank you for your feedback.” There was no real apology, no sense of accountability, and certainly no effort to make amends for ruining what was supposed to be our first proper weekend away in months. What should have been a relaxing break turned into a frustrating waste of time and money. Overall, the experience was incredibly disappointing. This hotel claims to be 4-star, but in reality, it barely lives up to a 3-star standard. Do yourself a favor—spend your money elsewhere.

This is a really lovely hotel. It’s beautiful in a huge stately building. The grounds are stunning too. The staff were wonderful, on the whole, there was one incident on Sunday morning when I asked if someone could help me with a problem with my car. I was told ‘no one’s available to help with that’. All other staff were courteous and helpful. On the day I was checking out, room service called at 9am!? I had booked late breakfast so I could have a lie in so unsure why they had to call so early when I was checking out?? The breakfast was lovely and substantial. I attended an event at the hotel which was also very well organised and catered. I also utilised the spa facilities which were very pleasant. I would recommend this hotel and I would stay at this hotel again.

We have had a lovely stay, the staff were very friendly and professional. The hotel itself is quite dated inside but the gardens are beautiful and kept well so it makes up for it. Breakfast was a nice atmosphere and organised well, along with a great choice of good food. Free parking on site is a bonus. Shame that our smoke alarm started beeping at midnight waking us up, the hotel reception said it’s common because of the weather conditions. Overall, we enjoyed our stay! :)

A splendid place to stay, very grand. Staff were all very good, and we very much enjoyed our dinner and breakfast. Unfortunately we were unable to linger and enjoy the extensive parkland

I had the room for people with reduced mobility and it was the least attractive room. Just because I am disabled doesn't mean I don't have the right to have a nice, bright room like the others. Also, when you opened the door to the room, you could see me in bed.
