Everything is what people have said, convenience, courtesy, services and value are all above and beyond. The room is very spacious. You can’t get better value than this. If you stay near South Gate area, stay here. It’s within walking distance to major attractions and everything else, shopping centers, bath houses etc.

One of those charming grand dame type vintage five star hotels where they've got all the trimmings, but everything's a tad dated and worn, but that's part of the charm. Gorgeous architecture, a blend of Neoclassical, French Renaissance, and Art Deco styles, combined with traditional Chinese classical elements. Staff is friendly and helpful at arrival and departure, helping with luggage and giving tips and recommendations. Rooms are heavy on the vintage wooden panels style, but that 20's charm is an organic part of this area of Shanghai if you ask me. Location is fantastic, no discussion, in the heart of the French Concession, a stone's throw away from Jingan and amidst an incredibly bustling area for dining, nightlife, shopping, cafes and art. Only two gripes I have with hotel that give minus points on Facilities: (A) -1 point for promising a Business Center that turns out to be someone's crowded and messy office with an extra desk crammed in with zero internet, not an international power socket around, and a totally unhelpful attitude from the attendants. (B) -1 point for the bathroom, that is so cramped that sitting on the toilet leaves zero room for arm movement, not very practical. Otherwise an excellent location to return for my Shanghai city center stay.

Excellent location-we upgraded our room to the superior which was significantly bigger although all rooms are very generous in size. Staff were very friendly-we had dinner in the hotel on our last night and again staff were great and food was delicious. I have stayed here about 15 years ago and will continue to come back again in future

Historically relevant and beautifully decorated Hotel with friendly service and great breakfast Good location in the French concession although probably not as modern as many other Shanghai hotels (has a bidet though and everything else you'd need really) it looking a bit old is part of the charm Feel like a boss staying here (bc it's a boss's villa)
