The facilities are very basic. The structure of the room is a bit concerning, made of bamboo skin over a bamboo or wooden frame, and it's a stilt-style room suspended in the air. The door doesn't close properly and only locks with a hook. There's a half-meter gap between the roof and the walls, so it's not a sealed room, and other creatures might wander in. The shower water never gets hot, and there are two fans but no air conditioning. Cleanliness: The hygiene is actually quite good, but the mosquito net has holes, and after it rains, there are an incredible number of bugs. Environment: The environment is very natural and rustic. Although the path isn't easy to walk, it's paved with stones, so you won't fall if you're careful. Service: The staff's attitude is very good, and you can even pay with WeChat Pay at the cafe. 🌟 Elephants: There are three elephants on the mountain side of Orchid. They are all gentle-tempered, don't seem to be abused, and live very well. One of them is a baby elephant, exceptionally cute, and you can play with it.

The staff were friendly and the food was delicious! If you love nature, this place is great, but be prepared for insects and dogs if you're not used to them.

My partner and I were unable to travel due to illness, and the property stated that if we wanted to claim a refund, we needed to attach a medical certificate. I attached both my and my partner's medical certificates stating that we were indeed sick and unable to travel. However, the property did not respond and did not issue any refunds.

Our stay at Chai Lai Orchid was honestly one of the highlights of our entire trip to Thailand. We loved it so much that we ended up staying in both the Riverside Room and the Garden Room because we simply couldn’t bring ourselves to leave! Our trip didn’t quite go to plan at first, as my partner wasn’t feeling well and had to stay behind in Chiang Mai before joining me later. The staff couldn’t have been more understanding or accommodating. They handled everything so kindly, and when we asked if we could extend our stay once my partner arrived, they moved us into a Garden Room straight away. Nothing ever seemed too much trouble, and their kindness made a stressful situation so much easier. The Garden Room was absolutely incredible. Waking up to that huge round window and having an elephant come right up to it for breakfast was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we’ll never forget. It felt magical while still knowing the elephants were free to choose to come over. The food was exceptional. Every meal we had was fresh, delicious, and full of flavour. We genuinely looked forward to every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. What makes Chai Lai Orchid so special is the people. Every single member of staff we met was friendly, caring, and genuinely passionate about what they do. They created such a welcoming atmosphere that it felt like home. Most importantly, it was clear that the elephants are treated with genuine love, respect, and care. Their welfare is obviously the priority, and it was wonderful to support an organisation that puts ethical treatment first. Seeing the bond between the elephants and their carers made the experience even more meaningful. The only two small suggestions we’d make are: * There were packs of dogs that occasionally fought over a female dog, which was quite intimidating and could potentially be dangerous, especially for young children. * We’d also love to see a couple of chairs outside the Garden Rooms so guests can sit and enjoy the stunning garden views—they’re too beautiful not to spend more time appreciating. Those are such minor points in what was otherwise an unforgettable stay. Chai Lai Orchid exceeded every expectation we had. The beautiful surroundings, incredible food, amazing staff, and unforgettable elephant experiences made it somewhere we’ll always remember. We left with heavy hearts and are already talking about when we can come back. Thank you to everyone at Chai Lai Orchid for creating such a special place and for making us feel so welcome. We can’t recommend it highly enough - if you want to feel like you’re in an Instagram post, book now!

We did the two day camping at the Karen village with Lon and Muay Thai (his dog)! And give that man a raise he went above and beyond, was so kind, funny, and informative. I cannot recommend this activity or this place enough guys, it made the entire thailand trip worth it 4 times over, if i could give this place more than a 5 star review I would. You help support locals, women's education, you help save elephants from slavery and being overworked, and you learn about the beautiful land and how the locals are deeply connected to the land and also to their communities. If you want to see elephants, choose this place!

The village visit was a highlight: we learned about Karen weaving traditions and bought a beautiful handmade scarf and bag, and met a woman in her mid-nineties — blind and deaf but still healthy and busy making bean paste steamed in banana leaves. The handicrafts are gorgeous and buying them supports the artisans directly. A few honest notes: the “rafting” is really a gentle bamboo float, expertly poled by a Karen boatman — relaxing, but don’t expect adventure. Photos in handmade frames are offered for sale at each stop (150–200 baht); there’s some sales pressure, but it’s benign and the money goes to the community, so we happily bought them all. The short hike to the waterfall was the sportiest part — and when they tell you to crawl across the slippery rocks, believe them. You really can’t walk it. There’s an option for a more challenging hike though- we just didn’t have time to fit it due to opting for the daytime private full day rather than overnight AND included the photoshoot. We added the one-hour photoshoot with Pern, which was absolutely worth it — it came with extra private elephant time, including meeting one of the babies. One tip: there wasn’t time to change beforehand, so if you want a polished look, arrive camera-ready. Ours turned out natural instead, which we loved. The food Artid prepared was outstanding. The star was a local take on pizza — no cheese, but a slightly fruity sauce and sausage on wonderfully fluffy bread that reminded us of Hawaiian bread. There was also chicken with Thai chili sauce, deep-fried banana that somehow tasted like chicken, and the most amazing fresh fruit: the best pineapple, watermelon, passion fruit, and dragon fruit I’ve ever eaten. Everything was served on banana leaves with a bamboo fork and spoon he carved that day, on a private deck. There’s also an inexpensive optional happy hour with cocktails at the end. Yes, parts are touristy — but it never felt extractive. You come away with real appreciation for Karen culture, its hardships and its joys, and for what an ethical elephant sanctuary can be. A blessing of a day.

We had the absolute trip of a lifetime here at Chai Lai Orchid. We fed, swam in the river, and had breakfast with the elephants, which was magical. What we never expected was the incredible experience we had with our guide, Kham. Throughout our hike he would make us hats and crowns out of the plants right off the trail. And the fruit and food they cooked for us was incredibly fresh and delicious! The bungalow (we booked Bungalow 2) was also very clean and had hot water and electricity. My sister and I left with a much deeper appreciation for all that nature has to offer.
