We stayed at Le Sauvage in mid-July, during a period of very hot weather in Besançon. Unfortunately, the hotel has no air conditioning. A fan was provided in each room, but the bed was made up with a thick synthetic duvet, which seemed totally inappropriate for the time of year. The bed itself was comfortable and the bathroom was perfectly adequate, although we found the bedroom furnishings rather cheap-looking and not really what we would expect from a hotel of this category. Our main issue, however, was the service. We arrived at around 3pm and found the reception completely unattended. We waited for about five minutes before anyone appeared to check us in. Later, at around 7pm, we asked if we could have a drink in the garden; the receptionist quite literally rolled his eyes at the request. We did eventually have a drink outside, and the garden is rather pretty, but unfortunately there was a dead rat lying in the middle of the small lawn. When we mentioned this to reception, the reaction was laughter rather than concern. More surprisingly, the rat was still there the following morning. We also paid an additional €20 for our dog to stay in the room. Nothing at all was provided for him—not even a water bowl—so it was difficult to see what the €20 supplement was actually for. Overall, the hotel has an attractive setting and some charm, but the indifferent and at times rather unprofessional service made this a disappointing stay.
