Avon Old Farms Hotel

Hidden charges and awful front desk assistance and closed recreational facilities

This hotel is in immediate need of reinvestment. It was built in the 50's and it looks like in the rooms that was the last time any money was spent. You have a small in the window air conditioner unit. The two night stand lights did not work. The safe did not work. The hair dryer did not work but the front desk provided a new one. The bathroom sink was stained or dirty. To flush the toilet you have to stand there and hold the flipper down until the toilet completes flushing. The ironing board had been bent at some time in its history so it sloped down went set up. There was no elevator so you carry your belongings up an old metal outside staircase to the second floor. This hotel is in an excellent location and the exterior looks wonderful. But I would recommend that you stay elesewhere.

The facility was lackluster at best. It used to be great. Eco friendly was claimed for not doing daily room service. Hypocritical. There were paper plates, plastic serve where, and poorly working HVAC units.  The organization was simply looking to cut down on costs. Similarly, I’ve seen better breakfasts at hotels that cost half as much. Vents in the bathrooms were nonfunctional. The window could only be closed from the outside. I look forward to posting this on yelp unless you make amends.

The free breakfast was a good way to start my day. Did not spend much time on the grounds. One afternoon I used the pool along with of my relatives that I had been visiting. We also ate dinner in the restaurant that night. Perfect afternoon and evening. Wait staff was great. What I will have to say (and I will take some of the blame) was that the tub in my bathroom was somewhat dirty the day I checked in, but I rinsed it out . The stopper for the tub was completely out , so I set it back in. The next day I took a shower, the tub backed up. I was in a hurry that morning to leave, so I made the assumption the tub would be drained when I got back that night The tub still had water in it when I returned. It was late in the evening, so I did not call anybody regarding it. That night, I attempted to turn on the TV and it didn’t work. I called down to the desk and there were no workers available, and the person at the desk said there was an outage. He also mentioned that he would leave a note for the morning person and I could get my room changed if I would like. I had no interest in changing rooms - I would have to repack and unpack. I did not mention anything about the tub at that time, as I thought I would be speaking with somebody from the front desk in the morning. No one ever called me back. I ended up pulling the TV out as it was on a swivel, and there were “0n/off”buttons, and channel up/down buttons on it. I was able to get the TV to work. Left msg at front desk re: issues

The hotel exuded New England charm in the reception, halls, and rooms. The dining and bar were excellent. I will return in the future.

Nice rooms, need a little updating but still very nice, beautiful grounds. Had dinner and breakfast there and both were very good.

Our room was not clean and after being offered another room on the first floor, all of the rooms on the first floor were not just traditional but musty, dusty, stained, damaged and outdated. The toilet had a cracked cover, unused old phone on the stained, wall-papered tiny room with awful, tub/shower. Only my teenage soccer player daughter used the shower as she was playing in the rain and needed to try to get clean. She absolutely would not after the one shower and said she would rather sit in the car for 3 hours until we got home to shower. Even more egregious was the fact that we paid $206/night plus $19/night for questionable amenities. We couldn’t use the pool due to the rain. I am not sure what else except outdoor parking which arguably shouldn’t be an extra charge in this non-urban area. I also discovered they had nicer “luxury” rooms on the 2nd & 3rd floors of the hotel which were only about $30/night more. We gladly would have paid this for a less “traditional” room. However, they were not available when booking and it’s not apparent on ******* how much worse these rooms really are. My family will never stay there again. They couldn’t wait to leave. The Farmington Inn we stayed at closer to the soccer fields the year before for the same soccer event was not modern but cleaner and overall a better experience. The Avon owner needs to update the old rooms. They are not “charming” or “traditional” in the correct sense; there is a difference between “charming” and dated.

The hotel was easy to get in and out of. The property was beautiful. The pool was very nice. The mattresses could use a little updating otherwise nice rooms.

The hotel was great, we enjoyed the pool and they had games there for everyone. The bar restaurant has a pool table there too. The breakfast was great too. I forgot something in the room and the hotel took care of shipping it to me. Great service
