Hotel Villa Ruimzicht

The first impression was very good. The hotel is housed in an old building, a former villa. This is something to keep in mind when considering structural aspects like the stairwells and walkways. The rooms were large and clean. The family room is divided into two separate rooms. The air conditioning can also be used as a heater, and the instructions were easy to understand. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel; the password can be found in the room. A drawback was that the windows are only single-glazed. When the outside temperature is around freezing, you can definitely feel the cold and have to use the room heater to counteract it. We also noticed that some lights were missing in the stairwell and hallways. It felt very dark, which is particularly problematic in the stairwell area. The placement of the light switches in the room itself is rather odd. There's no switch directly at the entrance; you have to walk quite a way into the room to find one. Similarly, there's no switch to be found in the adjoining room of our family room. It doesn't have a ceiling light. Light is provided by the lamp on the bedside table and the reading lamp by the bed. The lighting concept should definitely be reviewed by a professional. It's quite an adventure to do during the dark winter months! Breakfast was plentiful, fresh, and delicious. The live cooking station focused on egg dishes, although I didn't see a sign indicating what was on offer. We had to ask around. The reception staff were friendly and, in our opinion, really cool in their simplicity. They simply placed a standing table in the hallway, had a friendly lady behind it, and that was it. It was very pleasant! Finally, the hotel is completely digitalized. Check-in and check-out, room key—everything can be conveniently prepared and handled on your phone. This saves a lot of time for people just passing through.

We last visited this hotel 9 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thinking of somewhere to go for a 'winter blues' break, we decided to go back for one night. Places can change, and this place certainly has! Before booking, I checked the latest reviews, and one which stuck in my mind was from a couple who were given a 'Romantic Room', which had no windows, only a tiny sky light in the roof the size of a shoe box. I remember thinking, "Do not give us that room!". So, guess what, upon arrival, we are given the same room! Absolutely appaling, not a patch on the room we had on our last visit. We went back to reception and told them we would not accept the room, so they tried to give us a standard room, which had a window, only marginly bigger than the room they tried to give us (what was the point in me booking a better room to be downgraded to a standard one??). We complained again and rejected the second room they offered. After a 15-minute wait, they offered us a 'family room', which was adequate. It wasn't the romantic room which we had wanted, but at least it had windows! We ate in the restaurant, which was good, service was a little sloppy, and the waiter tried to charge us for an extra bottle of water, but all was sorted at the end of the night. Breakfast is a joke in this hotel! You join a huge queue, with one person cooking, to get a choice of eggs, and bacon if you wish. It's like standing in a works canteen! It's definitely not worth the money!! One of our biggest complaints about this place is that there is very little management, they hire a load of teenagers and just let them run it! I don't want to be disrespectful to the youth of today, but there is no assistance, breakfast being the classic example, is it waiter service, do you join the 'queue from hell', do you get your own coffee? Nothing at all from the staff. You have to figure it out yourself! This stay was a disappointment. After having such a fantastic stay 9 years ago, it was a real letdown! Too many things were either unacceptable or just OK. For what this hotel costs, we won't be going back, which is a shame, but places and staff change.
