Château Capitoul

Not quite the paradise that we had been led to expect. Our room in the chateau was great but the service around the place was haphazard. For example when we checked in we were told that someone would bring our cases to our room but after an hour they were still sitting at reception so I fetched them myself. We also had a few irritating interactions with younger staff members who responded to our decent French with bad English, and kept going even after we said it would be easier to communicate in French. The mosquitos were a constant menace in the Asado restaurant and bar area, despite the vast fans that had been deployed. The clientele was overwhelmingly English families and it was clear the hotel was doing its best to cater to this demographic, to the point that sometimes it felt we had not really left the UK. An undeniably beautiful spot though and with a few tweaks it could be magnificent.

I'd highly recommend Chateau Capitoul for a family/couples/friends or indeed solo holiday - it has everything and a fantastic laid back vibe about it. Hoping to return as soon as possible. Be sure to visit Gruissan and Narbonne and their many restaurants too - noting La Cambuse du Saunier in particular.

My sister recommended this after she had been in the much cooler month of April but commented to me how wonderful this place would be in the warmer months. She wasnt wrong. So easy to fly to with RyanAir from East Midlands (so easy and such good value) - little Carcassone Airport is very easy to navigate and collect a hire car from. An easy hour or so's drive to the Chateau on a straightforward route. The reception at check in was friendly and efficient with a glass of champagne and fruit juice for our two children. We had booked one of the smallest 'units' - Le Cave i think it was called which had two ensuite bedrooms and a living area with kitchen and a comfortable suntrap dining terrace. At first we were berating ourselves for not having pushed the boat out to get accommodation with a private pool because it was very hot whilst we were there - but it turned out it wasn't a problem as the main pool was really beautiful with lots of comfortable loungers, shade, a little bar and showers/loos/towels etc - and it was also quietly sociable. So you could chat to other guests if you wanted but could also just be totally private as well. The accommodation was really practical, comfortable and chic. We all slept very well. Although there was a bit of walk down to the beautiful and peaceful pool each day we saw it as essential exercise after all the pastries and rose. We ordered the 'in room ' breakfast basket on the first day which was wonderful. Then went to the local supermarket for the rest of our breakfasts as we have teens and noone ever wants to get up for a hotel breakfast in my house. We sometimes had lunch by the pool which was easy and quite well priced - or we walked up to our accommodation and had lunch on our terrace which was also a nice break from the midday sun. We had three dinners up at the Asado restaurant which has a beautiful al fresco setting and very friendly service. The actual delivery of the service is a little bit hit and miss with a couple of late/wrong orders but honestly the staff are so sweet, it didn't actually matter - i defy anyone to get into a hump when sat on that gorgeous terrace with its incredible views - we were offered a couple of Laurent Perrier as a sorry so that was fine! The food was also very good. Do bring insect repellent with you though/wear appropriate coverings because you will get munched otherwise. The addition of large outdoor fans was wonderfully welcome when it was super hot. They even put up the England semi-final world cup match for the brits in the bar which was very thoughtful of the team. We did day trips to Narbonne which was charming for its history, food market, little eateries and ease of access, Gruissan old town which was very pretty although small and also Carcassone (totally beseiged by instagrammers and lemmings - had to go to tick it off the list but not very inspiring at all which was a shame) Overall our stay at Chateau Capitoul was very relaxing, very easy

We had a really nice overnight stay here and a lovely meal at Asado restaurant (and drinks before) on the terrace. There’s also a gourmet restaurant but it was closed in the evening (it was a Sunday). All the staff were friendly and helpful and the welcome glasses of wine were a nice touch. We stayed in a room on the 2nd floor of the chateau. Bear in mind there is no lift (although help with luggage was offered) - 2 beautiful spiral staircases let up to our room - a little out of breath when we got there our bags! The room itself was spacious with a lovely large comfortable bed and a big walk in shower. Also a free bottle of wine. There are also a number of different sized villas in the grounds that you can stay in - some with private pools. There’s a nice large infinity type pool for all guests to use. . The breakfast buffet was extensive and delicious. Also the chef was on hand to make freshly prepared crepes, pancakes and scrambled eggs. We’d definitely recommend this hotel and hope to visit again in the future.

Beautiful hotel and houses that are finished to the highest standards. Management and staff were exceptional and could not do enough for us. Excellent spa and we have a great day cycling through the vineyard to the nearest town and beach. A really memorable break.

Staying at the Chateau Capitoule is an absolutely marvellous experience! The team is truely lovely and goes out of their way to make you and your kids feel like kings and queens!

This was stage 3 of a European Road trip and just an overnight stay. It could not have been more perfect. We arrived for 3pm, fitted in a couple of Beauty Treatments, relaxed in the Spa, followed by a lovely evening meal in Asado. Equally lovely breakfast the next morning and purchased a couple of bottles of wine before leaving at 10. The estate is gorgeous; the staff, food, room and spa were excellent, with a superb nights sleep to boot. Just what was needed after an approx 2000km drive and before completing another 1000km. Also, the web site prepared us well for the room we had booked on the top floor, no lift and travel light, which we did. 😃 Thank you for everything 😀

The villa was very confortable and well equipped also for a long stay. Breakfast was delicious with pancakes and crepes well done. Excellent friendly service staff.
