Hyatt On The Bund Shanghai

View: Guests frequently commend the breathtaking views from the rooms, especially of the Bund and Pudong skyline. The panoramic vistas are described as stunning and unforgettable, adding to the overall experience of staying at the hotel.

Imagine walking into a Hyatt, at the counter, 2 staff members were speaking in Mandarin Chinese on how it's better not to escalate the feud with a Korean guest staying in the hotel. One of the staff members saying "Come at me! I am not afraid, if it comes down to a fist fight, I am all for it!!". All this happening when you exactly understand what they are saying because you are bilingual. This was the opening experience at this hotel. The hotel staff tried to play it down and tried to keep switching to English when trying to converse with me, no offense, but I am trying to speak to you in your native tougue for which is my mother's tougue, instead of trying to offend the guest, maybe you speak be polite and peak in polite Mandarin? i.e. 您 instead of You (in broken english). I booked and paid specifically for the 'Bund View Room' on Trip.com, which is a higher-priced category. Instead, the hotel assigned me a completely different room with a cheaper SUPERIOR VIEW ROOM, that room is easily 40 USD cheaper per night. When I asked for the correct room, the front desk first refused to change it and also refused a refund, even though they admitted the room they gave me was cheaper. They also tried to gaslight me that 'Oh! Every room is different, its not always you will get the view you want.' Bare in mind i am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, I had completed 16 years of mandatory education on it and i have a National Level A Level Certificate on fluency and I am also a Han Chinese in the skin, it is literally a 'How dare you' situation. Only after I got visibly upset did they finally switch me — and they conveniently “found” a spare Bund view room. Bare in mind we had to lug all the luggage ourselves from floor 16 to 26, absolutely no help was rendered. For a hotel marketed as 5-star, there was absolutely no assistance with luggage. No greeting, no porter service, nothing — very surprising for a Hyatt. The only luggage help we got was from the doorman at the foyer of the hotel when the car pulled in. That is all we got. The building feels dated. Staff were not courteous, not warm, and not service-oriented. Overall, the only thing that was “5-star” was the price — definitely not the service or experience. I would not recommend this hotel, especially if you are booking a specific room category. Double-check everything because they clearly don't. Never again will i stay in this property, it is short of a borderline scam and a totally bad experience.
