Barceló Punta Umbría Beach Resort

Good buffet and swimming pool. Close to the beach.

My mom and I recently stayed at Barcelo Punta Umbría Beach Resort and, while we had an enjoyable holiday overall, there were several things that stopped it from being a higher-rated experience. The hotel itself is very clean, with our room cleaned every day without fail and fresh towels provided daily. The white bed linen was a nice touch, and all of the staff we encountered were polite and friendly. The pool is a good size with plenty of sunbeds available. As we’re British, we were up early each morning expecting the usual rush to reserve sunbeds, but we quickly realised there was no need. There were still plenty available until around 10:30am, which was a pleasant surprise. There are also four buffet restaurants offering plenty of variety, and the air-conditioned gym had decent equipment. Unfortunately, there were quite a few downsides. The location is fairly isolated with very little nearby, and the hotel itself is huge (around 1km long), so walking between facilities can take a while and may not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. The entertainment wasn’t really aimed at international guests. Everything, including the bingo, was entirely in Spanish with no translation, making it difficult for non-Spanish speakers to enjoy. Entertainment also didn’t begin until around 11pm, which felt far too late for us. Meal times also cater more to Spanish schedules, with the first dinner sitting starting at 8pm and continuing until 11pm. The choice of cocktails and alcoholic drinks was also quite limited. The pool rules are fairly strict. You can only leave your sunbed unattended for 30 minutes before your belongings may be moved, and inflatables aren’t allowed in the pool. One thing worth mentioning is that you’re allocated a different buffet restaurant each evening on a rotating basis. We were able to change ours at reception without any issues, although we did speak to other guests who weren’t as lucky. Another disappointment was the lack of a comfortable indoor lounge or lobby to relax in during the evenings. Instead, everyone sits outside on hard plastic chairs, which become quite uncomfortable after a while. Overall, my mom and I had a lovely break and the hotel is undeniably clean, well-maintained, and staffed by friendly people. However, it doesn’t feel particularly geared towards British or other international guests due to the lack of translated entertainment, very late dining and entertainment times, and a few restrictive policies.

It’s a great place to stay, and you can really see how dedicated everyone is to what they do. So far, we have absolutely nothing negative to say — only good things! The front desk works perfectly, and the staff at Restaurant Cale are amazing. There is a great variety of food, plenty of space for everyone, and the lady at breakfast, working at the grill, was particularly friendly and attentive to detail. The pool is perfect — clean, well maintained and very well taken care of. The kids’ club is amazing, and the kids are absolutely loving it. The slides, swings, splash park and even the bouncy castle are all fantastic. At the La Retama pool bar, even when it was at its busiest, the servers were always smiling, friendly and efficient. The customer service from the reservations department was also exceptional. They answered all our questions and genuinely did their best to accommodate our family. We know it may sound like we are saying everything is too good to be true, but as a family who also runs two hotels ourselves, we notice many things that other guests might not. We are genuinely very pleased with our experience. Even the maintenance and cleaning services have been excellent. There is honestly nothing we have found to complain about throughout the entire resort. We didn’t get the chance to try the spa, but the gym is amazing 😍 Raquel was extremely friendly and helpful, as was the gentleman at reception. The whole resort team has been wonderful. Everyone we have interacted with has been professional, friendly and clearly dedicated to providing a great experience. We are very pleased with our stay and would be happy to recommend the resort to other families.

Unfortunately, our stay was a major disappointment, especially considering the price and the reputation of the Barceló brand. The resort has good facilities and plenty of potential, and there were some positive aspects during our stay, but they were simply not enough to compensate for an overall experience that fell well below our expectations. One of our biggest disappointments was the entertainment. For a family-oriented resort, we expected much more creativity and variety, particularly in the evenings. The programme could easily include different experiences such as themed nights, beach activities, games, a luau, or other events that actually create memorable moments for families. Instead, we found the entertainment limited and largely forgettable. The All-Inclusive experience also fell short of our expectations. When choosing an All-Inclusive package at a resort in this category, you expect to enjoy your holiday without constantly having to think about what is or isn’t included. Unfortunately, that was not the experience we had. Even small details matter. At the bars, for example, the snacks available were basically limited to things like olives, crisps and nuts. This is simply not what we expected from a resort at this price point. We also experienced an incident during our stay that had to be reported. Although there was an attempt to resolve the situation, the way it was handled was not enough to restore our satisfaction. It is a shame because there are genuinely good aspects to the property, and some areas, such as the swimming pool, were enjoyable. But a family holiday is about the complete experience, not just the facilities. When you pay for a Barceló and an All-Inclusive resort, you expect a higher standard of service, attention to detail, food and beverage, entertainment and overall guest experience. This is precisely where we felt the biggest gap between what was promised and what was actually delivered. We left feeling that we had paid far more for the promise than for the experience itself. Based on the value for money we received during our stay, we would not return and unfortunately cannot recommend this resort.

Of all the staff there only few from front desk speak any english at all. Most of the signage does not have an english version so finding your way around this huge place is a bit difficult at first. The city surrounding this hotel is mostly dead. It takes real effort to meet anyone outside of the supermarket. And the food. Oh my god what a joke. Super all inclusive my ass. In all the restaurants food is of very low quality. Seafood straight up make me sick but the food peaked in the "international" restaurant. Withing 15 mins of walking in I was outside throwing up. Only upside of the service is that you can get drunk enough to forget the food.

I'm very happy to stay this hotel and Jaśmina, Rocio and Iris so beautufil person. It's great vacation.

Very good for family holiday. The ocean was great and the weather was very good. Not to hot, but hot

Poor food, poor room cleaning, poor reception service, groups of people creating troubles and is dirty place. Don’t go. Reception told me that we can park outside for free, got a fine… However the animation team were super good.
