Schafbergspitze(Schafberg)

Schafbergspitzeis located on the border of Salzburg State and Upper Austria, part of the Salzkammergut Mountains, with an elevation of 1,783m. It is surrounded on three sides by Wolfgangsee Lake, Mondsee, and Attersee, and is one of the landmarks of the Salzkammergut lake region. Its silhouette is highly recognizable: the southern slope rises evenly from the lakeshore, while the northern side features nearly vertical rock faces, making it look like a natural viewing platform from a distance.

You can hike up the mountain or take the cog railway. The famous Schafbergspitze steam cog railway departs from the town of St. Wolfgang at the foot of the mountain. Its red carriages climb along the cog track, making it one of the few remaining cog railways in Austria. The scene in the film *The Sound of Music* where the family rides the train up the mountain was filmed here. Hiking up the mountain requires overcoming an elevation gain of over 1,000m, and there are clearly marked trails along the way. Many hikers choose to walk one way and take the cog railway down, saving energy without missing the scenery.
