Would you like a cockroach with your coffee sir?
This Mercure hotel is asking you to pay a premium price because it's part of an international chain as opposed to offering real substance. It isn't value for money at all.
In its favour, the room is a reasonable size, it's in a handy location and it has an open outlook.
But on the downside, only the basics are provided for its guests.
The decor is dated, its tech is poor, the bathroom fit out is rudimentary, and they don't even provide a bathrobe.
It's internet signal was intermittent, and the remote device was virtually falling apart.
The staff appear more motivated by profit than customer satisfaction. When I asked to switch rooms from two single beds to a king sized bed, they charged me extra for the privilege! And when I asked if they could provide extra coffee for my room, they weren't helpful at all; instead directing me to the coffee machine in the lobby - not very convenient if you're making a 6:30 am conference call from your room!
Overcoming the inconvenience is one thing, coping with questionable hygiene is a different story. When operating the coffee machine, a small movement in the sugar sachet tray to the left of the coffee machine caught my eye; on closer inspection, I realised it was an immature cockroach. Then I spotted another on the wall to the right of the coffee machine.
Aside from the feeling of grossness, I was thankful I had not paid extra to have breakfast at the hotel.
Really, a very poor show.
