Hotel Kalevala

The biggest negative was the gym. The gym consisted of weights and things, no treadmill,no elliptical, etc. It was also very difficult to get the door unlocked. They would be better off saying there is no gym. Every other feature of the hotel was 4 or 5 star.

Where are the Elks? They don't tell you about the mosquitoes or that there is nothing do do except walk around the lakes or go on over priced guided tours. On the 240 euro per couple Elk Tour we saw no animals at all of any kind. The guide drove her old 2 wheel drive family car down forrest tracks unreasonably quickly. As it bounced around angrily we were expected to spot an individual perfectly disguised animal in the gloom lit by only the headlights. The guide inferred that the Elks were hiding till it got colder as it was unseasonably warm. But this is a summer tour and September is the end of Summer, and the tour had been running the past 2 peak summer months when it is much warmer. I advise a high degree of wariness for any shiny brochure or website advertising guided tours. You might be better looking for Elks elsewhere or at least not in August/September when the day light hours have diminished such that you are essentially searching for them in the dark and unknowingly wasting your money. Hotel very outdated.

It’s only 5 mins drive from Kuhmo town. The hotel vicinity offers trail walking, bike riding and winter activities.

Nice and cozy spa hotel with excellent staff This is a nice and cozy hotel by the lake in beautiful surroundings. The staff was excellent and very helpful in getting the best possible experience in Kuhmo and the area around it. Breakfast was good with home-baked bread. The hotel has a nice spa and sauna area, with an outdoor jacuzzi by the lake. It is very good value for the money.

We booked the Christmas holidays package and spent 5 nights at hotel Kalevala. It was by far the best Christmas experience ever. We had a modern room facing towards the frozen lake with a great view. A fairytale visit to Santa's facilities, a snowshoe walk, a short reindeer sleigh ride, smoke sauna and evening sauna w/ jacuzzis were included in our package and totally worth their price. Additionally, we did a husky sleigh ride and a snowmobile ride, which were a once in a lifetime experience. Food was tasty. There is just a minor improvement suggestion: Please label the dishes in restaurant. Although everything was good, we didn't know what we were eating several times. Would we come back? Definitely, but in a different season because we don't want to spoil our memories of this great experience.
