We booked a family room for a couple of nights whilst in Salzburg: we knew that we'd be arriving late, so notified the hotel in advance, and they left the room key in a key box for us (along with keys for a couple of other guests). The hotel's reception closes at 6PM, so anything after that requires special arrangements. The family room was quite large, reasonably basic, but with all the amenities you'd expect. It was clean and well maintained, plus with the added bonus of air conditioning. The location is good: just over 5 minutes' walk from the main railway station, and there's a bus stop almost outside the hotel too. There were a couple of things that could have been improved. Firstly, the mattresses on the beds were extremely hard. Apparently, this is normal in Austria, and didn't bother me all that much, but not all of us were able to get proper sleep. We were told afterwards that there's a pillow/bedding menu available, but as it's not advertised in the room, and reception closes at 6PM, we weren't aware of this. The other issue was a bedside light that randomly turned itself on in the middle of the night! This kept happening and, as you couldn't take the bulb out of the LED light, we eventually just pulled the key card out of the wall to turn all the electricity off! I did mention this to reception on checkout: they were friendly and apologetic and said that they would look into it. Another note: reception opens at 7:30AM, so if you're on an early start, you might miss them. This should have been a 4-star review, but for the response received upon returning home. Like all booking agents, ours asked us to review our stay. We tried to provide a balanced, fair review similar to the one here (good sized rooms, good location, a couple of issues that might be improved upon) and the response from the hotel was effectively one of 'how dare you give us a review like that' and 'perhaps if you stayed in other hotels in the area you'd realise that your rating is too low'! Well, we have stayed in lots of hotels/guesthouses and, whilst not all are perfect, they have all accepted fair and true feedback with a level of professionalism that was, sadly, missing this time. Maybe this was a one-off (everyone has a bad day now and again) and although we would never stay there again, I'd still suggest that Villa Flockner offers good value accommodation in a nice location.
