We stayed 3 nights in the attic room [No 8] pictured on Tripadvisor although two steep and very narrow flights of stairs mean it wouldn't be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. While comfortable and reasonably quiet, it has an odd wedge-shaped bath with hand-held shower which were both tricky to use. Like many French hotels, there's a small wardrobe and no drawer space so we couldn't unpack! On our first night we had the Menu Estivale [130 euros] with an excellent and generously served wine pairing [25 euros] under the canopy of lime trees. Rather tough smoked duck breast was the only stumble but was swiftly replaced with noisette of veal from the a la carte menu. On the other nights we ate at Chez Julien in Paunat [also highly recommended] and in Les Eyzies. Breakfast [25 euros] included very good fresh fruit juice, bread and croissants and all the dishes were frequently replenished. There are several cafes in the village for those only wanting coffee. A key element of Le Vieux Logis's appeal is the exceptional service and attention to detail from the warm welcome at reception to restaurant staff ironing the linen before each table is laid. The setting is another key element and - although the beautifully laid out garden isn't enormous - it seemed to absorb guests without feeling over-crowded. The only exception was the arrival of a large [20+] noisy group of US cyclists who sat on the edge of the pool drinking cocktails. As the hotel is now on the Dordogne itinerary of the "Backroads" US cycling group, hopefully these influxes won't become a problem......
