The pagoda dates back to the Northern Qi dynasty; it's a 7-story brick pagoda with dense eaves that is still standing after more than 1,000 years. Standing beneath it and looking up, the layers of eaves are very neat. Most of the old temple buildings are gone, leaving only the pagoda and a few old stone tablets. Fine grass grows in the cracks of the bricks at the base of the pagoda, showing its age. Along the way, my child asked if people lived in the pagoda. I explained a bit about the old pagoda and the former temple, but they only half-understood and were completely focused on climbing the stone steps in front of the pagoda. 🏯 We had dinner at a farmhouse again—stewed chicken with mushrooms and corn cakes—and my child ate plenty. Guide: Several rivers in Pingshan, Shijiazhuang, ideal for self-driving and camping I took a trip around Xiejia River over the weekend, and now I've experienced the beauty of several lovely rivers on the north bank. Xiejia River—I'm not sure if the name comes from the phrase "laying down arms and returning to farming," but it's often mistakenly written as "laying down armor and returning to farming." Interestingly, along this river, there is a village called "Zhongtian" (Farming Village). Navigation: Xiaojue Town, then drive north along the river. Our first stop was Muyue Village. Driving time: About 2 hours to reach Muyue Village. There are many side roads along Xiejia River. You'll find rivers of various sizes along the way, and water volume increases during the rainy season. The scenery along the route is quite good. Some areas were once developed into scenic spots, such as Landao Stone, Tianyan Mountain, Fanxi Valley, Taihang Water Town, and Canglu Peak. Most of these are now abandoned or only partially open. However, it’s a bit hot here, with an elevation of about 400-500 meters, and the temperature hasn't dropped yet. Second stop: Wayao Valley Leaving Muyue Village, we followed Xiejia River north. We initially planned to visit Qiangzi Village and then return, but it seemed a bit troublesome, so we skipped it. Continuing north along Xiejia River near Wayao Valley Village, we found a small cave. We parked by the side and explored the cave for a while. The cave has flowing water and a breeze, making it very cool. However, during the rainy season, when water levels rise, it’s not accessible. Third stop: Longerqing Village Continuing north from Wayao Valley, there is a fork: one road passes Canglu Peak towards Tuoliang, the other leads to Laohutou Forest Park. We went directly towards Laohutou. The elevation increased, the temperature dropped, and the village had more trees. The scenery was better than the first half of the trip. We passed Longerqing Village, which has a pleasant name, good environment, easy parking, and is suitable for camping and playing in the water. Fourth stop: Laohutou Forest Park (Miaogou, Sanjiaocheng, Taohuajie, Liupugou) I was curious about the road conditions from Xiejia River to Laohutou Forest Park. The map showed a dirt road, but after driving it, I found it was all paved, though narrow in places but manageable for passing. Because few people come here, the ecology is excellent, with many squirrels and wild rabbits. There are many places to explore nearby. You can hike Laohutou from Miaogou, Liupugou, or Sanjiaocheng, or climb to Wutai Mingxi Valley from Taohuajie Village. There are many routes, beautiful scenery, and cool temperatures. Also, near Liupugou Village, camping is possible with large trees and flat grasslands. Fifth stop: Wutai Mingxi Valley Leaving Liupugou Village and heading back, you pass Wutai Mingxi Valley. Many people camp and stay here in summer; we saw quite a few tents yesterday. The meadows here are larger, and you don’t have to climb too high to see grasslands, cattle, pine trees, and more. The temperature is low, so bring a jacket if you visit in summer. Returning from Wutai Mingxi Valley, you’ll pass Tuoliang Scenic Area, Zhongtai Mountain, Wuyuezhai, and Manshanhua Valley. If you have time, you can stay nearby and explore slowly. If you don’t have time for a long stay, you can follow our one-day self-driving route.
