The Museum of Guangxizhuang Autonomous Region

1k reviews
The Museum of Guangxizhuang Autonomous Region (hereinafter referred to as "Guangxi Museum"), established in 1934, is a provincial-level comprehensive museum of history and art, and one of China's first national first-class museums. It houses nearly 100,000 artifacts (sets), including 148 first-class cultural relics (sets), 1,974 second-class cultural relics (sets), and 3,865 third-class cultural relics (sets). The museum's collection is not only vast in quantity and diverse in categories, covering a wide range from the Paleolithic Age to modern times, but also features strong local ethnic characteristics. These artifacts hold significant historical, artistic, and scientific value, bearing witness to Guangxi's historical development and evolution across various periods. To promote the high-quality development of museums, with strong support from the Party Committee and Government of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region underwent renovation and expansion starting in January 2019. The new museum building, covering approximately 42,000 square meters with 10,000 square meters of exhibition space, opened to the public in late November 2022. It features permanent exhibitions such as "Ancient Civilizations of Guangxi" and "Flames of the Southern Frontier: Guangxi's Modern Revolutionary History," along with thematic exhibitions including "Setting Sail from Hepu: Guangxi's Maritime Silk Road of the Han Dynasty," "A Kaleidoscope of Glazes: Ceramic Collections," and "Exquisite Craftsmanship: Treasures of Artistry." These exhibits comprehensively illustrate Guangxi's developmental path within China's diverse-yet-unified civilization framework. The main building consists of an exhibition hall featuring the stilt-style architecture of the Zhuang ethnic group and a cultural relics garden with strong ethnic characteristics, integrating classic nostalgic views, leisure cultural spaces, and modern technological design. The new museum's functional zoning is scientifically and rationally planned to fully meet the public cultural service needs of the museum. It adds four interactive areas: a historical theater, a children's archaeology exploration hall, a youth activity center, and a cultural creative shop. The museum has established a smart infrastructure based on middle platforms, big data, cloud computing, microservices, and knowledge graphs, enabling smart management functions such as remote reservation, AR audio guides during visits, and volunteer management. It also offers diverse and personalized services including live guides, audio guides, historical theater performances, archaeological interactive experiences, and ethnic cuisine. In the era of cultural and tourism integration, the newly revitalized Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region will integrate functions such as collection, research, exhibition, education, tourism, and international exchange. Rooted in its distinctive "museum-garden combination" and "dynamic-static complementarity" approach, it is dedicated to exploring Guangxi's historical and cultural essence, showcasing Guangxi's image, and telling Guangxi's stories well. By promoting the fusion of culture and tourism, the museum aims to make cultural relics "rotate," "smart," and "dynamic," striving to achieve creative transformation and innovative development of China's outstanding traditional culture. This effort contributes significantly to building a magnificent Guangxi in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics.Nanning · 95.5 km from Pingguo

Sanniang Bay

Sanniang Bay is located on the southern coast of Qinzhou, a tranquil and beautiful small fishing village. Its famous attraction is the Chinese white dolphins inhabiting the nearby waters, though spotting them requires some luck. Beyond dolphin watching, the simple fishing village life here is also appealing. Whether strolling on the beach, foraging at low tide, or enjoying the peaceful coastal life, this is a perfect leisure destination. Most travelers come from downtown Qinzhou for recreation, with two main options. One is a round-trip day visit to enjoy the beach and rocky shores, then take a speedboat to spot dolphins before returning, taking about half a day. The other option involves a longer stay at the attraction, where travelers can lodge in fishermen-run homestays, savor fresh seafood, relax on the beach, and experience the tranquil coastal fishing village life for a leisurely getaway. Spring and fall are good times to see dolphins, with a higher chance of spotting them. They can occasionally be seen on the beach, but the better way is to take a boat trip. The attraction offers speedboating or fishing boat tours for dolphin watching, though no method guarantees a sighting. After sailing a certain distance from the coast, you will reach the habitat of the Chinese white dolphin. Sometimes you can spot these beautiful dolphins leaping out of the water. Adult white dolphins are mostly white and pink, while calves have darker skin tones. They are extremely precious, and the photos taken of them are utterly adorable. Many hammocks are hung among the trees on the beach of Sanniang Bay, where travelers can relax and enjoy the serene coolness of the seaside. There are also several large rocks by the shore, such as Sanniang Rock and Sea Mother Rock, where you can climb the reefs and take photos with the sea. In addition, the seafood in the fishing village is very fresh and worth trying.China · Qinzhou

Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area

7.1
4.7/5

The Ningming Huashan Rock Art Scenic Area is located by the Ming River in Ningming County, Chongzuo, Guangxi. In 2016, the "Zuojiang Huashan Rock Art Cultural Landscape" was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and this site is the core component of that cultural landscape. On the steep limestone cliffs facing the river, dense clusters of ochre-red images painted by the ancient Luoyue people during the Warring States to Eastern Han periods can be seen. The main panel stretches over 100 m in width and dozens of meters in height, with over a thousand identifiable images, making its scale and preservation remarkably outstanding among similar rock art discoveries in China. In the local Zhuang language, this mountain is called "Bālái," meaning "the mountain with paintings." To see the rock paintings at Huashan, taking a cruise is the classic way. The boat sails on the Ming River flanked by karst peaks, offering picturesque views along the way. When approaching the cliff, look up to see images suspended dozens of meters above the river—frontal human figures with raised arms and spread legs in a frog-like squatting posture, densely covering the cliff face, interspersed with motifs like bronze drums, ring-pommel knives, ferries, and dogs. Scholars generally believe these cliff images depict sacrificial rituals of the ancient Luoyue people. Yet, why the hematite-painted patterns remain unfaded after over 2,000 years and how the ancestors climbed the high cliffs to create them remain debated. The cruise usually comes with a guide, making it far more engaging to listen to Luoyue legends while identifying the cliff images than a cursory glance. Don't rush to return after viewing the rock paintings. The traditional Zhuang villages of Laijiangtun and Bayaotun in the core area, built along mountains and rivers, are called the "living museum of rock art." Among bamboo fences, rice fields, and old houses, you can witness traditional crafts like bamboo basket weaving, Zhuang cloth making, and Zhuang embroidery, as well as taste local delicacies such as winnowing basket feasts, pounded glutinous rice cakes, and sugarcane wine. Every year on the third day of the third lunar month, the attraction hosts the Luoyue ancestor worship ceremony, with bronze drums, tianqin music, and folk songs creating a vibrant atmosphere—a perfect opportunity to experience Zhuang culture. A small tip: The rock paintings are high above the river, appearing as reddish-brown patches to the naked eye from a distance. To see the details of the figures clearly, secure a good viewing spot on the boat in advance, and bring a telephoto lens or binoculars for a more enjoyable experience.China · Ningming

A regular ticket is sufficient, as you'll find that there's simply not enough time to visit the paid attractions if you go at midday. Also, you must bring a film camera next to the Fast sign. It must be a battery-free film camera with manual metering. If possible, bring your own film, as film cameras at the attraction aren't cheap—300 yuan for 36 exposures.

The exhibits are plentiful, concentrated on the second and third floors, but unfortunately, the museum doesn't limit visitor numbers, making it impossible to sit still and appreciate them at a leisurely pace. I suggest following the example of other provincial museums and changing the reservation system to two-hour time slots—limiting the number of visitors would significantly improve the experience. Also, the smell of recent renovations in some exhibition halls is quite strong.

San Niang Bay is a low-key yet stunning national AAAA-level scenic area in Guangxi, renowned as the "Hometown of the Chinese White Dolphin." Here, azure seas and golden sands abound, uniquely shaped rocks abound, and the original fishing village exudes charm, blending culture and nature seamlessly. The highlight is the opportunity to take a speedboat out to sea for a chance to encounter the rare Chinese white dolphins; with luck, you might even spot a dreamy pink one. The sand is fine, the water clear, and at low tide, you can go beachcombing and collect shells. The Tianya Stone and San Niang Stone offer incredibly photogenic views. The area is not heavily commercialized, and the seafood is fresh and affordable, making it ideal for leisure vacations, family trips, and dolphin watching—a hidden gem in the Beibu Gulf for secluded seaside experiences.

Starting point: Exit F of Chaoyang Square Metro Station → Nanning Historical Museum. The facade of the Republican-era Western-style building is very photogenic. It was closed the day I visited, so I could only take pictures of the exterior. Next, I visited the Deng Yingchao Memorial Hall, City God Temple, Jinshi Lane Ancient Residences, Lijiang Academy, Yinshi Lane Oil-paper Umbrella Street, Zhonghua Grand Theater, and Xingning Road Arcade. The retro facades and neon signs created a fantastic atmosphere. After that, I went to Changyou Pavilion to see the Yongjiang River view. If you're just casually strolling around, an hour should be enough. There are plenty of places to eat and drink in the area, and you could easily spend half a day there.

I went in September. The last boat left at 4:30 PM. The staff said they only let boats depart for groups of eight or more, and although we only had four people, they still let us go – a huge thumbs up! It was like having the boat to ourselves. The round trip was 80 minutes, and the scenery along the way was absolutely stunning. There were natural beauties passing through canyons, as well as idyllic rural landscapes along the way. It rivals the scenery of Guilin and is definitely worth a visit. Take 1-2 hours to explore.
