JR West Pass Guide: Discover Western Japan

With a JR West Pass in hand, the wonders of Western Japan are yours to explore. From the temple-lined streets of Kyoto and the street food culture of Osaka, to the solemnity of Hiroshima, the stunning dunes of Tottori, the iconic art island of Naoshima, and the samurai elegance of Kanazawa, much of what makes Japan so appealing to UK visitors lies in the west. Add in the ancient temples (and deer) of Nara, the sacred mountain monastery of Koyasan, and the magnificent castle at Himeji – all three UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and you begin to realize that Western Japan could fill an entire trip all by itself.

Offering unlimited travel across this region on the JR West rail network, the JR West Pass covers all of the cities and sights listed above on a single pass, ranging from an All Area Pass covering the full network to smaller zone passes for more focused, local exploration. And following the 2023 rise in the all-Japan JR Passes, which increased in cost by almost 70%, smaller regional passes like these have become the smart traveler's alternative, offering outstanding coverage at a fraction of the cost.

In this guide, we compare every JR West pass option, walk you through the JR West pass price structures, examine routing maps, and outline step-by-step reservation rules so you can unlock Western Japan with the right pass for your itinerary.

JR West Pass Coverage and Map

The JR West Pass covers the central and western portion of Japan's main island, Honshu, with coasts on both its northern and southern shores. Along its southern Sanyo corridor runs the Seto Inland Sea, connecting Hiroshima, Okayama, and Kobe with the Kansai heartland of Osaka and Kyoto, while its northern San'in coast traces the shore along the Sea of Japan to Tottori and Matsue, and a northeastern arm reaches into the Hokuriku region – to Fukui, Kanazawa, and Toyama.

Some of Japan's most celebrated highlights lie within this area, including Hiroshima’s solemn Peace Memorial and the sacred island of Miyajima (ferry included), the temple districts and zen gardens of Kyoto, the shopping streets of Osaka, Kanazawa’s samurai old town, Nara's deer and ancient temple grounds, as well as easy access to Naoshima, the pumpkin-filled art island on the Seto Inland Sea.

Take a look at the map below for the clearest way to see the full extent of the JR West All Area Pass (the full blue region shown above) as well as the complete network, and the best starting point when deciding which zone pass best matches your route.

JR West Passes Cost and Validity

Choose your Pass by Your Travel Days

From a lightning-speed Kansai city break to a slow journey along the coast of the Sea of Japan, whether you’ve just got one day or a whole week to explore Western Japan, there's a JR West pass to suit every itinerary. Use the guide below to match your trip to the perfect pass.

Short Trips (1-4 Days): Perfect for Kyoto and Osaka Beginners

Starting from just ¥2,800 for a single day, the Kansai Area Pass (1–4 days) covers Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Kobe, Himeji, and Wakayama. It includes the HARUKA express train directly from Kansai International Airport (KIX). Step off the HARUKA in Osaka and you're just minutes from Dotonbori's iconic street food scene—including piping-hot takoyaki (octopus balls) dusted with bonito flakes and mayonnaise.

The Kansai Mini Pass (3 days, ¥3,000) covers a slightly tighter area (excluding Wakayama and Himeji) but is still outstanding value, with Universal Studios Japan also within reach.

The 5-Day Sweet Spot: Best Regional Bestsellers for Shinkansen Travel

Whether you're timing your visit for hanami beneath Himeji Castle's cherry blossoms or autumn foliage on the Kii Peninsula, Western Japan rewards every season, and there are two 5-day bullet-train passes which put it all within easy reach.

The Kansai WIDE Area Pass (5 days, ¥12,000) extends beyond Kansai to Kinosaki Onsen on the Sea of Japan coast, where guests can wander between traditional wood-panelled bathhouses in yukatas, or take the Sanyo Shinkansen to visit Okayama and its world-famous Korakuen garden.

The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (5 days, ¥17,000) pushes further west to Hiroshima, and includes the Miyajima Ferry, making it the perfect choice if you’re looking to combine Kansai with the history of the Peace Memorial and the sacred island’s iconic floating torii gate – it also offers the chance to savor both Osaka-style and Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.

Both passes also cover the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, a themed bullet train running along the Sanyo Shinkansen line between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. Featuring custom pop-culture design work, it offers one of Japan's most recognizable train experiences.

Long-Distance Adventures (7 Days): The Ultimate Western Japan Journey

For extended 7-day journeys into Western Japan's coastal regions:

Kansai-San'in Area Pass (7 Days, ¥18,000): Follows the Sea of Japan coast to the breathtaking Tottori Sand Dunes and the historic castle town of Matsue.
Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass (7 Days, ¥19,000): Travels northeast via the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa, famous for its preserved samurai districts, gold-leaf ice cream, and Kenrokuen Garden.

JR WEST Rail Passes seat reservation

JR PASS Kansai Wide Area Railway Pass (5 days):Unlimited free seat reservations are included on all covered Shinkansen and Limited Express services. From your seventh reservation onwards, bookings must be made at a JR West ticket office rather than at a ticket machine.

How to purchase and exchange your JR West Passes via Trip.com

With individual Shinkansen tickets considerably more expensive than a pass, a JR West pass is one of the smartest investments you can make for a trip in western Japan. Once purchased on Trip.com, your exchange order is valid for up to three months, and with seat reservations opening from one month before the date of travel, booking early is recommended for the best choice of times and seats.

Once in Japan, you can exchange your voucher at major arrival hubs including Kansai International Airport (KIX), Shin-Osaka, or Kyoto Station. Read on for a step-by-step guide on how to use your JR West pass, from booking to boarding your first bullet train in Japan.
