Temples beat cat cafes for better value

Temples beat cat cafes for better valueHOT

Dozens of cats in Thailand call temples home, and in China, temple cats even lounge on lotus thrones beneath Bodhisattva statues—across Asian Buddhist temples, cats are never just passersby. They are the most at-ease residents of these ancient sanctuaries. From Thailand to China, every temple’s cats have their own way of life. If you want to pet a kitty while praying for blessings, this guide will show you which temple cats are worth a special trip. 🎉 Chiang Rai Wat Phra That Chom Sak · The all-cat temple Locals simply call it the Cat Temple—there are only cats here, no dogs—so quiet it feels like a feline dojo. Cats are everywhere and all people-friendly, so you can interact to your heart’s content. Perched on a hilltop overlooking rice fields, the temple radiates calm. 🎁 Bangkok Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan · A cat guard squad by the 46m reclining Buddha One of Bangkok’s oldest temples, it houses a gleaming 46m reclining Buddha. Around your feet, on the steps, and across the courtyards, resident stray cats wander about—many call them the temple’s guardians. Cats napping beside the giant Buddha are a frequent, delightful surprise in travelers’ photos. 🍂 Shanghai Longhua Temple · An orange tabby atop a lotus throne A big orange tabby was photographed lounging serenely on the lotus seat of an arhat statue, prompting a viral debate about divine cat lovers. In fall’s ginkgo season, the cleaning crew arranges fallen leaves into giant cat shapes, and images of ancient temple + ginkgo + cats trend year after year. The temple is pet-friendly, with resident strays happy to accept gentle pats. 🧡 Nanjing Jiming Temple · Shanxi the orange tabby’s workday routine Shanxi is the temple’s breakout star. Staff made a 1:1 paw-print stamp with its paw, and when visitors stamp their booklets, Shanxi “supervises” nearby. Ever cooperative and always ready for photos, it’s so popular that netizens joke it will be petted bald. In Chinese folk culture, orange cats symbolize good fortune, and many visitors touch Shanxi for a little luck. 😺 Hangzhou Shangtianzhu Faxi Temple · The chill icon of the cat world These cats went viral on sheer vibe—squinting on stone steps, dozing against yellow walls, daydreaming by ginkgo trees. They neither fawn nor flee, as if they have seen through the world. One cat appears on the same stone pillar every day to pose; visitors bring cat treats as offerings and wait 30 mins just to photograph its nap. 🏠 Wuhan Baotong Temple · A cat temple with its own map There are so many cats that someone drew a cat map: lion cats roam the wooded back hill, orange tabbies rule the mid-slope, and calicos stand guard at the Hall of Ten Thousand Buddhas. At the entrance, an orange cat meows a welcome, and in the parking lot, a black-and-gold cat patrols like security. There’s even a “cat villa” on the back hill for senior felines. The oldest cat is 18 years old and sometimes comes out to watch the sunset. When thousand-year-old temples meet languid cats, even your breathing slows. Make time for a temple cat retreat—it is more soothing than any meditation app.
