Firstly, Astypalea is a wonderful peaceful island but I would call it 'no frills' - if you are expecting 5 star flashy hotels you will not find them here! It was perfect for us, we wanted peace and quiet with no nightclubs and loud music. It is a very authentic greek island. We met many greeks and Italians but only one other english couple. We were very happy with this little family run hotel. In the UK we would probably call it a B&B. Maria, Mike and Litza could not have made our stay better. It is located within a 6 minute walk of the main Chora with a choice of nice restaurants and bars and about a 10 minute steep walk down to Livadi beach. We are both in our mid 60's and enjoyed the walk up and down most days. There are a lot of steps in the hotel so if you can't manage them make sure you have a room on the reception level. The room was very nice, (Imeroviglie) with a nice bathroom and we had a verandah with a small jacuzzi pool (which we didn't use). The view of the sea and castle was stunning. The A/c worked well, we had clean towels everyday if we needed them and sheets were changed every few days. The provided a bottle of water on arrival and there was a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel was very clean and quiet. There is a small swimming pool but no gym, as advertised on their website. The breakfast was delicious with a wide selection of freshly made greek pastries and bread daily, fresh local yoghurt, honey and fruits, as well as cold cuts, cheese and eggs. The fresh orange juice was delicious. We went on a day trip on Mike's boat, which was really nice and worth every penny not to be too crowded. We were given a lovely snack and lunch was spaghetti with huge prawns. What a lovely family they are, they couldn't do enough to make our stay welcome - I would highly recommend staying here. Thank you for making our 12 night stay so relaxing.
