Literary Arts
Literati is thrilled to welcome Jessica Francis Kane to celebrate the release of her new novel, Fonseca. A Ticket is required to attend this event, and all tickets come with a copy of Fonseca About The Book: The story acclaimed English author Penelope Fitzgerald never wrote, of her real-life journey to Mexico with her son in search of a much-needed inheritance, by Jessica Francis Kane, bestselling author ofRules for Visiting Winter 1952. Penelope Fitzgerald’s husband is a struggling alcoholic, their literary journal is on the brink, and she is pregnant with their third child. When she receives a letter from two elderly sisters named Delaney, distant relations with a silver mine, who dangle the possibility of an inheritance, she recognizes it as a creative and practical lifeline. Jessica Francis Kane’s brilliantly imagined Fonseca fictionalizes Penelope’s real and momentous trip to northern Mexico in pursuit of this legacy. She leaves her two-year-old, Tina, with relatives and sails for New York with her six-year-old, Valpy, in tow. From there, mother and son take a bus all the way to . . . Fonseca. But when they arrive, nothing goes to plan. There are others vying for the Delaney money, and for three months, from Day of the Dead to Candlemas, Penelope must navigate a quixotic household and guide her impressionable son. More and more people frequent the house: an ambitious American couple, various local entrepreneurs and artists (including Edward Hopper and his wife, Jo), and finally a handsome stranger who claims he is a Delaney. With heart, humor, and a deep understanding of her subject that has characterized the range of her work her whole career, Kane (whose work “could have been written by Jane Austen’s great great-great-granddaughter” —Oprah Daily) has written much more than an homage: Fonseca is an enthralling world of its own as well as a stunning fictionalization of a season in Fitzgerald’s life. Jessica Francis Kaneis the author of the national bestseller Rules for Visiting, This Close, The Report, and Bending Heaven. This Close was longlisted for The Story Prize, The Report was a finalist for The Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, and Rules for Visiting was longlisted for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. Her stories and essays have appeared in many publications, including Harper’s Magazine, The New York Times, Slate, Virginia Quarterly Review, McSweeney’s, ZYZZYVA, and Granta. She lives in New York City and Connecticut. Information Source: Literati Bookstore | eventbrite

1/31: Other Worlds - A Sci-fi/Fantasy Book Club Come join us at Booksweet for an out-of-this-world book club experience! Everyone is welcome to join the discusion of our favorite scifi and fantasy reads. Whether you're a seasoned fan or just dipping your toes into the genre, this is the perfect place to explore new worlds with fellow readers. At our November gathering, the group voted on our next read! For our Friday, January 31 gathering from 7-8 pm, we’ll be discussing Jade City by Fonda Lee. Your Eventbrite RSVP is super helpful to our snack and beverage planning! About the book // FAMILY IS DUTY. MAGIC IS POWER. HONOR IS EVERYTHING. Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for—and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion. Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon’s bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation. When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone—even foreigners—wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones—and of Kekon itself. A modern classic and word-of-mouth sensation, Jade City is the World Fantasy Award-winning story of magic and kungfu, where four siblings battle rival clans for honor and power in an Asian-inspired fantasy metropolis. So... what's this book club like? // Scifi / Fantasy readers have been gathering bi-monthly for over a year now and it's been a blast! Some people finish the read, others dip in for as long as they have capacity for. All are welcome, valued, and celebrated. The group draws a crowd of about 15-20 people; enough to keep the perspectives diverse and fresh, but not too many that all voices aren't heard. We have a number of folks who've returned to us--and a number who are new. We discuss prepared prompts but we also go with the conversational flow. After a good discussion, the group votes on the next session's read. Feel free to pitch a book to the group, whether it's a new book you're itching to read it or it's a favorite! Booksweet is located in The Courtyard Shops, filled with AMAZING dining options. We will provide water and light refreshments (including nut-free and gluten-free options). Snacks and drinks are totally welcome; don't feel shy about sipping boba while we chat! We hope to see you there! Information Source: Booksweet | eventbrite
