Roman Lincolnshire | Grantham Museum

Grantham
Roman Lincolnshire
Come join us at
Grantham Museum
for a fascinating talk exploring the rich history of Roman Lincolnshire!
Lincolnshire was occupied by the Romans for over three centuries, and there are many traces of their presence to be found today.
This talk will take us back to discover all about Roman Lincolnshire and Roman Lincoln. Erik will look at the evidence we have for Roman Lincolnshire, how it changed over time, what Roman Lincoln was like and briefly how it all ended. Having taught Romans at University and to school groups in museums, Erik knows a lot about what we know plus (more importantly) what we do not know as well as what we think we know but is based on dodgy evidence.
Don't miss out on this great opportunity to step back in time and uncover the secrets of Roman Lincolnshire!

Actors and Theatres in Georgian Lincolnshire | Grantham Museum
Sep 18, 2025 (UTC+1)
Grantham
Join us as we discover all about actors and theatres in Lincolnshire in the period 1730 to 1850
Our 'Actors and Theatres in Georgian Lincolnshire' talk is about actors and theatres in Lincolnshie in the period 1730 to 1850. At that time there were more theatres in the county than there are today, and actors made a living by touring those theatres on an annual circuit. That was the golden age of theatre in Lincolnshire, with more live performances than there are in the 21st century. The main company of actors in Lincolnshire was based in Lincoln and toured about seven or eight towns. By the end of the period here was enough demand for some other companies to be established. In addition, stars from the London theatres came to the county in the summer when the London theatres were closed.
About the Speaker
Neil Wright is a Chairman Emeritus of the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology and author of numerous books and articles on the history of Lincolnshire, and Boston in particular. His book "Treading the Boards" was published in 2016 and is linked to this talk. He is currently writing a book on Boston in the period 1764 to 1853.
