SUMMER RECITAL IN VARNUS HALL: LEGENDARY ORGANIST XAVER VARNUS PLAYS BACH | Varnus Hall
Jul 27, 2025 (UTC-3)
Brooklyn
"Words on paper are a flimsy medium with which to describe the eye-opening power of yesterday's performance. Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould. That's not a name to be invoked lightly, but Varnus, like Gould, has more than virtuosity and interpretive strength, he has the rare talent of being able to make us hear his instrument in a new way, as though he were re-inventing it on the spot."
THE GLOBE AND MAIL
May 8, 1986
"Varnus's playing is characterized above all by a high degree of awareness and a tightly controlled Romantic conception. His technical knowledge is impeccable and his articulation extremely rich: he is able to use it in a differentiated way to bring the complexity of Bach's polyphony to life more than usual. He boldly exploits the instrument's dynamic extremities in both directions. His memory is accurate and unerring. He spends more time than usual on the echoes of the last chords, and he delays the resolution of dissonances almost to the point of intolerability. His surprising, sometimes astonishing phrasing reveals hitherto undiscovered beauties of works that are already well known. Varnus's playing - even if not everyone agrees with his approach - is captivating and convincing. Varnus's art is a challenge for contemporary performers, not just organists. His playing stimulates, even forces, the rethinking and reshaping of works and a somewhat outdated performing style. It is an inescapable fact: after Xaver Varnus, it is no longer possible to play the organ in the same way as before."
SZOLNOK ÚJ NÉPLAP
April 20, 1990
"The Bach-Varnus combination is like that of Chopin-Rubinstein".
NORDBAYERISCHER KURIER
November 2, 1990
“No one who heard this performance could doubt his essential qualities as a musician. He knows what Bach is trying to say, and he delivers the message through a medium that is far more familiar to modern ears than the soft-spoken tracker-action instrument of Bach’s time.”
THE MONTREAL GAZETTE
May 25, 1987
“Varnus is one of the most influential figure in organ music in the early 21st-century.”
THE NEW CLASSICAL FM CANADA
November 19, 2019
***
According to ticket offices, Xaver Varnus is among the three most popular organists in the world – it is nearly impossible to get tickets to his sell out concerts. His first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. He lit up the musical firmament of the world like a shooting star. He has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in the Berliner Dom, Canterbury Cathedral, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., Notre Dame, Saint-Sulpice and Saint-Eustache in Paris, as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Grand Court Organ in Philadelphia. However, fate reserved the most moving invitation for Varnus until 2014, when, near to his fiftieth birthday, Thomasorganist Ullrich Böhme invited him to play the famous Sauer Organ in Leipzig's Thomaskirche, over the grave of the mighty Johann Sebastian Bach.
Organist, improviser, author, lecturer and media personality, Varnus has had a dramatic impact on audiences’ acceptance and appreciation of organ music. Over the course of his career, Varnus has played live to more than seven million people worldwide, recorded fifty-three albums, made sixty concert films, and written five books. In 2006, he played the inaugural concert of the grand organ of the Palace of Arts in Budapest, and in 2009, he gave two subsequent sold-out concerts with the iconic French jazz pianist Jacques Loussier at the Palace of Arts. In 2011, he gave two joint concerts with the legendary Rhoda Scott, which sold 30,000 tickets in a single weekend. Mr. Varnus’ videos have sur- passed 43 million views on YouTube. His Bach concert film, recorded at his recital in the Berliner Dom in 2013, has become the most watched organ concert movie in music history, with 19 million views. His “Quadruple Platinum Disc Award” winning album “From Ravel to Vangelis”, released by SONY in 2007, is the bestselling collection of organ recordings ever.
“Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould.” These lines are by the distinguished North American critic Robert Everett-Green, which appeared in Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe & Mail on May 8, 1986. A few years later, the Toronto Star music critic Ronald Hambleton wrote: “Varnus has been called the Horowitz of the organ (The New York Times), or contrariwise the Paganini of the organ (Le Figaro). And even the Glenn Gould of the organ. But he is none of the above. Instead, he is plainly the Varnus of the organ, a self-assured prodigy with a mind of his own”. As a Canadian citizen, Varnus spends much of his time at his offi- cial residence Villa Varnus, his family’s beautiful historical country estate at Lake Balaton, as well as at his 12th century house in Italy and his home in Berlin. During the summer months Xaver Varnus resides in Nova Scotia where he is the artistic director of his international music festival hosted in his private concert hall, within a 19th century Victorian church. In 2023, Xaver Varnus also purchased another abandoned 19th century church in the Transdanubia region, which he named Adam Varnus Memorial Hall in memory of his brother, who died young. Xaver Varnus has received many honours, including the Most Excellent Order of the Republic of Hungary, the Officer’s and the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit.
***
The Varnus Hall in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia is not just a concert venue, it is also a living version of 19th century Victorian life in the 21st century. Built between 1847 and 1895, Varnus Hall was originally a Congregationalist church. The ceiling design of the hall is indeed very special, resembling the inverted interior of the hull of a ship. The first church was built in 1847, and when the second church was built in 1895, it was added to the first church, which was used as a Vestry from then. The architect for the new church was Ernest McLeod and the builder was Arthur Boucher. Thanks to the huge amount of wood, the acoustics of the hall are crystal clear. The hall's magnificent concert organ was designed by the famous British organist Graham Percy Steed and built by the legendary Casavant Frères in 1977, as the company's 3338th opus. The tower's large bell was cast in the 20th century and is called The Bourdon. This bell is rung on every major public holiday in memory of the church's founders. The building complex surrounding the church includes the Canadian residence of the current owner, organist Xaver Varnus, in addition to a small cafe and museum, which tells the history of the church building and its organ. The building structure, and the nature that surrounds it, truly brings one back to the magnificence of the 19th century, while the majority of the furnishings come from the Varnus family's two centuries-old European collection. Varnus Hall's mission is to present extraordinary music and musicians on the stage of this ancient and magnificent hall, to bring the transformative power of music to the widest possible audience, and to foster the future of music through the cultivation of new works, artists, and audiences.

Mapping with Richard Parrish | UrbanGlass
Jun 24, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Students will explore the shape, texture, form, structure, and measurement of surface features, whether of person or place,in the shallow space of kilncast bas relief panels. The medium is kiln glass in open faced castings using ceramic fiber paper as molds. The class will be approximately 30% lectures and demonstrations with the remaining time used for projects. My earliest work in kilnformed glass involved the human body and maps. While the mapping aspect was rather obvious, the body imagery was hidden in most cases, echoing my personal struggle with who I was and who I am.
What to Expect:
Students will explore their ideas initially through drawing, paper maquettes, and models. These will be the basis for open faced casting of small-scale samples and test panels. Test pieces will lead to finished glass panels approximately 6"x 9"x .75". We will work primarily in black, gray and white colors.
Kilnforming work involves a mix of seated and standing activities, including preparing glass pieces for firing, and loading and unloading the kiln. A particulate respirator mask is required when working with fine glass powders or unloading kilns after firing and would be provided for you if needed. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. To learn more about accessibility the
Accessibility
page on our website.
Additional work time for intensive students:
Students will also have access to additional hours in the studio, without instruction, on Wednesday - Saturday from 5 - 9pm. Students must be able to work safely in the studio, and be able to set up their area without needing instruction. Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.
Eligibility:
Experience with casting or sculpture is helpful. Students should have a basic knowledge of fused glass and cold working glass. Students interested in this class without this knowledge should reach out to UrbanGlass to discuss further. Open to ages 14 and up. Read more about how to prepare for class on our
Registration Info
page.
Pick-up:
The glass needs to be fused in the kiln and cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass.
We recommend registering for classes early to reserve your spot! We base materials, and teacher needs off of student enrollment. Early registration not only guarantees your spot in class, but also helps to ensure the class will run. Classes with low enrollment may be canceled within two weeks of the start date of class. Contact our Registrar of Education, Ari Eshoo, at arianna@urbanglass.org if you have questions about the class or would like to arrange a payment plan.

El Dorado Drive
:
From the
New York Times
bestselling author of
The Turnout
comes a simmering, atmospheric novel of friendship and betrayal, following a women-led pyramid scheme in suburban Detroit.
All I want is to be innocent again.
But that's not how it works. Especially not after the Wheel.
The three Bishop sisters grew up in privilege in the moneyed suburbs of Detroit. But as the auto industry declined, so did their fortunes. Harper, the youngest, is barely making ends meet when her beloved, charismatic sister Pam—currently in the middle of a contentious battle with her ex-husband—and her eldest sister, Debra, approach her about joining an exciting new club.
The Wheel offers women like themselves—middle-aged and of declining means—a way to make their own money, independent of husbands or families. Quickly, however, the Wheel’s success, and their own addiction to it, leads to greater and greater risks—and a crime so shocking it threatens to bring everything down with it.
Megan Abbott turns her keen eye toward women and money in
El Dorado Drive
, a riveting story about power, vulnerability, and how desperation draws out our most destructive impulses.
Murder Takes a Vacation
:
Highly acclaimed
New York Times
bestselling author Laura Lippman returns with an irresistible mystery featuring Muriel Blossom, a former private investigator and middle-aged widow whose vacation on a Parisian river cruise turns into a deadly international mystery…that only she can solve.
Mrs. Blossom has a knack for blending into the background, which was an asset during her days assisting private investigator Tess Monaghan. But when she finds a winning lottery ticket in a parking lot, everything changes. She is determined to see the world that she sometimes feels is passing her by.
When Mrs. Blossom booked her cruise through France on the MS
Solitaire,
she did not expect to meet Allan on her transatlantic flight. He is the first man who’s sparked something inside her since her beloved husband passed.
She also didn’t expect Allan to be found, dead, twenty-four hours later in Paris, a city he wasn’t supposed to be in.
Now Mrs. Blossom doesn’t know who to trust on board the ship, especially when a mystifying man, Danny, keeps popping up around every corner, always present when things go awry. He is convinced that Allan was transporting a stolen piece of art, and Mrs. Blossom knows more than she lets on, regarding both the artifact and Allan’s death.
Mrs. Blossom’s questions only increase as the cruise sails down the Seine. Why does it feel like she is being followed? Who was Allan, and why was he killed? Most alarmingly, why do these mysterious men keep flirting with her?

Deerhoof, Body Meat, iiisa | Pioneer Works
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Pioneer Works is excited to bring
Deerhoof
to our Main Hall on June 28, 2025 as they embark on their "31 Flavours Tour" to celebrate their 31st year. The evening will also include opening performances from locals,
Body Meat
&
iiisa.
About the artists...
Since forming in 1994, the San Francisco band
Deerhoof
has cemented their place as one of indie music's most influential bands with their unruly and anarchic creative impulse. The mercurial rockers—consisting of founding drummer Greg Saunier, bassist and singer Satomi Matsuzaki, and guitarists John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez—come to Pioneer Works fresh off the release of their 2023 album
Miracle-Level
, sung entirely in Satomi Matsuzaki’s native Japanese.
For a band that seems to thrive on collapse, it’s simply amazing that this American-Japanese quartet is now celebrating their 31st year. Though Deerhoof
long ago established itself as one of the greatest rock groups ever to stride the earth—and if you think that’s hyperbole, you haven’t seen them live—the furiously inventive quartet releases new albums on the schedule of a young band still hungry for its first break. Each one discovers some previously unknown combination of candy-coated hard-rock riffs and free-jazz percussive freakouts, sideways J-pop hooks and fearsome dissonance, trenchant social commentary and surrealist humor. Fronting it all is Satomi Matsuzaki’s inimitable alto, whose plainspoken calm can seem strangely outside of the band’s maelstrom. This music is joyful and foreboding, cybernetic and deeply human, carrying an implicit note of defiant optimism in their refusal to bow to convention or received wisdom. Deerhoof is defined by such paradoxes.
Body Meat
embarks on a multi-dimensional world-building endeavor, partly influenced by hours spent playing games like ‘Elden Ring’ and ‘Nier Automata,’ drawing inspiration from their expansive storytelling and gameplay. Taylor imagines each song as its own distinct ‘level,’ and himself as the avatar moving through an immersive storyline.
iiisa
is the solo project of NYC-based vocalist and improviser-composer, isabel crespo pardo. Their intimate songs emerge from warm sonic landscapes filled with familial chatter and field recordings from their home in Costa Rica. With “a gloriously improvised heart,” they transform opaque memories into powerful ephemera in hopes of offering solace.Pioneer Works music programming is made possible in-part by New Belgium Brewing Company.

Unity x AI = Now Anyone Can Make Video Games | NYU Tandon @ The Yard
Jun 28, 2025 (UTC-4)
Brooklyn
Unity has long been the choice for aspiring game developers. It has a large intuitive visual interface, but relies on code to dictate game interactions and behavior. Now with modern AI tools, the code component is accessible to developers with little or no coding experience.
This course will introduce the Unity game engine in a clear, practical way. It will cover the basics of the UI and how things work in a 3D video game environment. We will then move on to integrate code into this environment and understand interactions and scoring. We will end by building a game and deploying it to the web with WebGL.
