based on 605 reviewsSacred Heart Cathedral, Guangzhou is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guangzhou. The site was originally the location of the Viceroy's Palace during the Qing Dynasty. Because its walls, pillars, and twin towers are all constructed of granite, locals in Guangzhou traditionally refer to it as the "Stone House." It is one of the four all-stone Gothic cathedrals in the world and the largest Gothic stone structure with twin spires in China.
The cathedral was designed by French architects, and the masonry work was led by Guangdong stonemason Cai Xiao. The granite was quarried from Ngau Tau Kok and Cha Kwo Ling in Kowloon and transported to Guangzhou by sea. The facade is modeled after the Basilica of Saint-Clotilde in Paris, while the interior of the nave and the semicircular apse are modeled after the Toul Cathedral in France. The pair of stone spires reach a height of 58.5 m; the west tower houses a large clock, and the east tower contains bronze bells shipped from France. Inside, pointed arches and ribbed vaults converge upward, and the doors and windows are inlaid with red, yellow, blue, and green stained glass, creating a soft light year-round. The building's floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross.
