Qingyuan Mountain

High on Qingyuan Mountain in Quanzhou, a monumental stone figure of Laozi sits quietly beneath the sky — one of the most remarkable surviving works of Daoist stone sculpture in China. Carved during the Song dynasty, the statue is traditionally regarded as the largest surviving stone image of Laozi. Unlike statues that strive for dramatic grandeur, this one feels remarkably calm and approachable. Laozi wears a broad Daoist robe, leans comfortably against a low support and gazes outward with a gentle, almost grandfatherly expression. The carving is deceptively simple. The sculptor used soft, restrained lines rather than excessive ornamentation, yet the massive stone figure possesses an unmistakable inner strength. Its quietness and simplicity are deeply compatible with the aesthetic ideals associated with Song-dynasty art. Look closely at the face and another fascinating detail emerges: the eyes and ears are rendered with striking economy. It almost seems to echo the famous words from the Dao De Jing: “The five colours make the eyes blind; the five sounds make the ears deaf.” And yet, after admiring this serene old master, there is only one question left… Where is my blue ox? 🐃🐃 📍 Laojun Rock, Qingyuan Mountain, Quanzhou, Fujian, China 🇨🇳 🚶 How to Get There: Qingyuan Mountain is located just north of central Quanzhou and can be reached by taxi or ride-hailing from the city centre. Laojun Rock is one of the mountain's best-known cultural landmarks and can be included in a wider visit to the scenic area. 📸 Photography Tip: Use a low shooting angle to emphasise the monumental scale of the sculpture. Include the surrounding rock and vegetation for context, then switch to close-ups of the face, robe folds and carving details. ✨ Signature Feeling: Ancient stone, Daoist philosophy and the unexpectedly warm smile of a thousand-year-old “grandfather.” He has the wisdom, the robe and the serene expression — now, where did his blue ox wander off to? 🐃

If you're visiting Quanzhou, I highly recommend spending a day at Qingyuan Mountain (清源山). 🌿 With an entrance fee of 70 yuan, it's one of the city's most rewarding places to explore, combining nature, history, and breathtaking scenery. 📖 Legend of Qingyuan Mountain According to local legend, Laozi, the founder of Taoism, once traveled through these mountains while searching for harmony with nature. Captivated by the peaceful landscape, he chose Qingyuan Mountain as a place to rest, meditate, and share his wisdom with his disciples. After he departed, the people carved his image into the mountainside to honor his teachings. Today, the famous Laojun Rock has become the symbol of Qingyuan Mountain; this incredible stone sculpture of Laozi was carved during the Song Dynasty and is recognized as the largest and oldest surviving Taoist stone statue in China. 🥾 The highest point of Qingyuan Mountain is 498 meters above sea level. The climb is enjoyable via concrete stairs, and with every step the views become even more impressive. From the summit, you can admire Quanzhou, the surrounding green hills, and, on a clear day, even the distant coastline. 🏯 Near the top, you'll find the peaceful Nantai Temple (南台寺), surrounded by ancient trees and quiet mountain paths. The calm atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to take a break before continuing your hike. 📸 Whether you're interested in hiking, photography, Chinese history, or simply enjoying beautiful landscapes, Qingyuan Mountain has something for everyone. It's one of those places where nature and culture blend perfectly together.

📜Ancient City Water Charm Quanzhou West Lake Park, a lake dredged under the supervision of Northern Song Dynasty governor Cai Xiang, holds the Minnan temperament of half the city’s fireworks and half its poetry. When the autumn breeze sweeps across the 800-acre lake, the koelreuteria trees along the shore suddenly light up like golden lamps—the wonderful combination of tiny yellow flowers, pink seed pods, and dark green leaves is just like what Shi Tiesheng wrote in "My Earth Temple": "The wind makes the little lanterns on the ground roll, as if countless small bells are ringing softly." 🌳The Fable of Three Trees Approaching the lawn on the east shore, three koelreuteria trees are performing a one-act autumn play. The tallest stretches its branches toward Citong Pavilion, the middle one paints ink shadows on the grass, and the shortest busily scatters golden flakes into the water. Looking from here, Qingyuan Mountain in the distance resembles a blue-black screen, and Yudai Bridge curves like a crescent hook catching the falling seed pods—the whole city has tuned autumn into warm tones. 🌉The Ferry of Time The stone pagoda on the island in the lake dates back to the Ming Dynasty. When Zheng He’s fleet set sail from here, the koelreuteria trees also witnessed wooden sails turning into clouds. Nowadays, you can often see girls in Hanfu spinning under the trees at dusk, with seed pods rolling toward the Tang-style stone arch bridge. Time in Quanzhou loves to play this layered game. 📌Practical Guide Best viewing spots for koelreuteria: Along the lakeside boardwalk from the North Gate entrance to Citong Pavilion Golden period: Early morning or sunset from late October to mid-November Hidden activity: Collect intact seed pods as bookmarks (surprises often found under the trees) When the koelreuteria trees start sending golden postcards to the Quanzhou Post Office, we know—this place, called the "City of Light" by Marco Polo, carries the romantic genes of the Maritime Silk Road from the Song and Yuan dynasties even in autumn.

If you know, you know. I was always captivated by the gentle charm of Jiangnan at West Lake, but after visiting Tianhu at the foot of Qingyuan Mountain in Quanzhou, I realized that Southern Fujian also hides such a healing, scenic gem🥰 📍Location: Tianhu, Qingyuan Mountain, Quanzhou 🎫Ticket: Included in the Qingyuan Mountain scenic area admission 🌡️Temperature in Aug–Sep is 27–34℃. The sun is intense during the day🔥, so I don't recommend going up at noon. I suggest entering after 3:00 PM. The forest is dense with shade and there's a gentle breeze, making it much more comfortable to walk around. Avoid the crowded main trails and head to the Tianhu area; it instantly gets quiet. The emerald lake is surrounded by green mountains, the water surface glimmers, the banks are lush with vegetation, and the distant mountain silhouettes are soft. It lacks the delicate charm of Jiangnan, but possesses the open, refreshing feel unique to Southern Fujian's mountain forests🍃. The boardwalk along the lake extends along the water's edge. Just walking around is very stress-relieving. The greenery of the forest reflects on the lake, and every snapshot looks like a cinematic landscape photo. ✨Travel tips ▫️Tianhu is located halfway up Qingyuan Mountain. There's a bit of an incline to hike. If you're not feeling up for it, you can take the scenic shuttle bus directly to the vicinity to save energy ▫️There are quite a few mosquitoes in the forest🦟, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent ▫️Outfit suggestion: Wear light colors. They go perfectly with the emerald lake and green mountains, making for great photos ▫️The temperature on the mountain is slightly lower than in the city, so you might want to bring a light sun-protective jacket ▫️After visiting Tianhu, you can stop by Laojun Rock on the way to check out the World Heritage stone carvings. You get double the fun in one trip No need to travel to Jiangnan; you can encounter the comfort of green mountains surrounding emerald waters right here in Quanzhou. Escape the city hustle and bustle, and come here to breathe in the fresh air and zone out—it's just so comfortable💚
