Tianshan Tianchi

Tianshan Tianchi, also known as Tianchi National Geopark and anciently called "Yaochi," is located in Fukang City, Changji Prefecture, on the northern side of Bogda Peak. Approximately 110 kilometers from Ürümqi, it stands as a renowned tourist destination in Xinjiang.

In ancient Chinese mythology, Tianchi was also the bathing place of the Queen Mother of the West.

Tianshan Tianchi Lake sits at an elevation of 1,910 meters, with a maximum depth of 105 meters. The crystal-clear waters perfectly reflect Bogda Peak, while the surrounding spruce forests create a fairy-tale landscape. This attraction encompasses diverse natural wonders including alpine lakes, wetland meadows, and forested valleys. In 2013, it was designated as a National Geopark by the Chinese government. Tianchi Lake features three water bodies: the main lake plus two additional ones on its eastern and western sides.

On the east side lies Feilong Pool, also known as "East Xiaotianchi," located 500 meters east of Tianchi Lake. Below the pool stretches a sheer cliff where waterfalls cascade down like a rainbow, earning the scenic spot its poetic name "Hanging Spring and Jade Rainbow."

To the west lies Qianlongyuan, also known as "West Xiaotianchi," located approximately two kilometers northwest of Tianchi Lake. The pool, shaped like a full moon, is surrounded by towering pines. When the bright moon shines overhead, its tranquil reflection creates a scene called "Dragon Pool with a Moonlit Jade," hence the name. A waterfall cascades down the side of the pool, plunging tens of meters like a silver ribbon, earning the poetic name "Jade Belt with a Silver Curtain." Above the pool stands the Wenting Pavilion, offering a unique vantage point to admire the waterfall. The attraction features interconnected boardwalks, allowing visitors to explore all scenic spots on foot.

On the eastern shore of Tianchi Lake stands the Temple of the Queen Mother of the West, originally built during the Yuan Dynasty. The current structure was reconstructed in 1999 on the original temple site, dedicated to the worship of the Queen Mother of the West, hence also known as the "Niangniang Temple." Visitors can reach it by hiking along the lakeside boardwalk (approx. 2 hrs) or by taking a cruise, which offers excellent views of the lake scenery.

To reach Maya Mountain, visitors must take a shuttle bus and cable car. The towering cliffs and jagged stone peaks create a breathtaking sight—from afar they resemble a row of horse teeth, while up close they appear as a maze of competing rock formations that dazzle the eye. This unique landscape was shaped by rock weathering. The mountaintop is relatively flat, featuring lush grasslands that bloom with buttercups and wildflowers in summer. From this vantage point, you can take in panoramic views: Tianchi Lake to the north, the Bogda Peak and snow-capped mountains to the east and south appearing almost within reach, while the farmlands of Urumqi are clearly visible to the west.
