The Shanghai Grand Theatre is located on the northwestern corner of People’s Square in central Shanghai’s Huangpu District. The theatre building itself is evocative and elegant. Since opening in 1998 it has staged more than 6,000 performances of operas, musicals, ballets, symphonies, chamber music concerts, spoken dramas, etc. The Shanghai Grand Theatre has three performance spaces of varying size, including arguably one of the equipped automatic stages in the world. The grand lobby is impressive in its own right being lavishly decorated with white marble and crystal. As a feature on the Shanghai skyline, the Shanghai Grand Theatre is one of the city’s true cultural gems.
