Bailu Hot Spring

Just got back from Shijiazhuang! I'm speaking from the heart and giving you the honest truth 🙅‍♀️ Shijiazhuang itself is full of life and rich in culture; it's definitely not the "boring" place people online say it is! But November–December really isn't suitable for the average tourist. Your experience could easily go south. If you're planning a year-end trip, you must read my real-life lessons learned! First, the biggest deterrent is the magical dry cold and wicked winds of early winter in the north 🥶 Shijiazhuang in this season isn't just cold; it's the piercing northwest wind! Daytime temperatures are barely acceptable, but once the sun goes down, the cold wind sneaks right into your collar and sleeves. I went out fully bundled up—scarf, hat, mask, everything—and I was still frozen to the bone. My eyelashes even got frosty, and my phone would automatically shut down after a few minutes outside. Taking photos of the ancient city or street scenes was impossible to do comfortably; just lifting my hand to take a picture was torture. Plus, the temperature difference between day and night is extreme. You might be fine in a hoodie in the midday sun, but you'll need a thick down jacket morning and night. It's hard to dress for, and it's easy to catch a cold from the temperature swings. Second, the weather is gray and gloomy, which really hurts your photo opportunities ☁️ There are few sunny days in autumn and winter; it's mostly overcast or smoggy, and the air quality is poor. Zhengding Ancient City, Longquan Ancient Town, and the exterior of the Hebei Museum are all stunning, but I spent four days there and three of them were gray. Without blue skies and white clouds, the atmosphere of the ancient architecture is cut in half. You just can't get those crisp, healing landscape shots, so if you're coming specifically for photos, you'll likely be disappointed. Also, the experience at outdoor attractions is terrible! At popular outdoor spots like Wuwushui and Western Qingdao, some roads and steps start to ice over by the end of November. It's super slippery, so you have to wear non-slip shoes and be very careful. The plants on the mountains are mostly withered. Without the greenery of spring and summer or the red leaves of autumn, the natural scenery is quite monotonous. It feels bare and isn't very scenic, so there's almost no fun in hiking or wandering around outdoors. But to be objective, visiting Shijiazhuang in November–December isn't all bad ✨ It's great for niche, laid-back travelers, and the value for money is unbeatable! The biggest advantage is that it's completely off-peak, so there are very few people! You don't have to wait in line for the Hebei Museum, Zhengding Ancient City, or any of the popular streets. You can wander and take photos freely without the crowds, and it's really comfortable to quietly explore historical sites and view artifacts. Plus, accommodation is a great value! The peak-season markups are gone. Prices for city hotels and Zhengding homestays have dropped by 30%, and you can get a clean, comfortable room for just a hundred yuan or so. It's a huge advantage for those on a budget. Autumn and winter are also the perfect seasons for Shijiazhuang's cozy activities ♨️ Outdoor activities might not be fun, but indoor and winter-exclusive activities are amazing! After a tiring day of exploring the city, go soak in a warm bath at Bailu Hot Spring or Guoyu Hot Spring. Soaking in hot water while the cold wind blows is incredibly healing and drives away the chill. If you like fun, you can also go skiing at Western Qingdao. The snow is soft in early winter, which is beginner-friendly, and there are fewer people, so you don't have to wait in line for the slopes. The skiing experience is far better than in peak season. I have to highlight Shijiazhuang's cozy winter comfort food 🍜 Cold weather is perfect for hearty Hebei dishes! Hot clay oven rolls, donkey meat sandwiches, big-pot stew, and beef soup with pancakes—every bite is warm, filling, and full of local flavor. The small street-side shops are great value, affordable, and have large portions. Just find any restaurant the locals frequent, and you won't be disappointed. Coming here in autumn or winter is a total foodie's dream! Finally, here's a summary of my honest advice for visiting Shijiazhuang in November–December ❌ Not suitable for: Travelers focused on scenic spots, outdoor activities, taking photos, those who hate the cold, or those on a short, rushed trip ✅ Suitable for: Travelers on a budget, those who love culture and museums, laid-back travelers, foodies, and those who want to enjoy hot springs or skiing Here are a few more tips to help you avoid pitfalls 👇 1. Dress appropriately! You must wear a long, thick down jacket, fleece-lined pants, and non-slip snow boots. Carry hand warmers with you, and don't wear thin clothes just to look good. 2. Prioritize indoor activities! Focus on the Hebei Museum, indoor shopping malls, hot springs, and skiing, and reduce long periods of wandering outdoors. 3. Keep your phone in an inner pocket! Try to take your phone out as little as possible when outdoors. Low temperatures make it easy for it to shut down, which will mess up your photos and payments. 4. No need to get up early! In autumn and winter, the sun rises late and sets early. Sleep in, and head out when the sun is at its best around noon. Travel really depends on the season! If you're looking for stunning scenery and a perfect travel experience, I highly recommend visiting Shijiazhuang in the spring or autumn. It's comfortable and great for photos~
