Soori Penang

We’ve just finished a fantastic stay at this beautiful little gem of a property in Penang, located right in the heart of George Town, just steps away from the famous street art and Armenian Street. We would highly recommend this hotel, not least because of its unique location within the historic Khoo Clan House compound. The shophouse-style rooms add so much character and make the stay feel genuinely special. The atmosphere throughout the hotel is gorgeous. The interiors and architecture have been thoughtfully restored, paying subtle homage to the traditional shophouse style while incorporating a modern touch. Everything felt beautifully maintained, and the cleanliness of our room was excellent. Most importantly, the service from the entire team was fantastic. It’s clear that there is a real sense of “home” here. Everyone, from the Hotel Manager to the housekeeping team, was incredibly warm, friendly and welcoming. Our only suggestion, particularly for a property positioning itself as a boutique luxury hotel, would be for management to consider adding a few more hosts/frontline staff. The existing team seemed to be under quite a bit of pressure, running around and doing their absolute best to cater to all the guests and rooms. We seemed to see the same three or four faces throughout our stay, which really highlighted just how much the team is handling. That said, their dedication and hospitality were genuinely impressive, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. A beautiful, character-filled property with a fantastic location and a wonderful team — we would happily return and will be telling our friends home!

I stayed at Soori Penang for two nights on my own and honestly wished I had booked a longer stay. The room was the highlight for me. It was beautifully designed, very spacious, and had a calm, luxurious feel without being over the top. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and I really appreciated all the little touches—from the quality toiletries to the well-stocked minibar and thoughtful amenities. It was one of those rooms that you actually looked forward to coming back to after a day out. I even found myself spending a little extra time just relaxing in the room because it felt so comfortable. Breakfast being included was a lovely bonus. Everything I tried was fresh and delicious, and it was such a nice, relaxed way to start the morning before heading out to explore George Town. The location couldn't have been better. I hardly needed transport as so many cafés, restaurants, bars, and heritage streets were just a short walk away. It was easy to spend the day wandering around and discovering something new around every corner. One evening, I decided to have a cocktail at the bar instead of heading out, and I'm glad I did. The drinks were excellent—beautifully crafted and surprisingly good. It was the perfect way to wind down after a day of sightseeing. What I enjoyed most was how comfortable I felt as a solo traveller. The hotel has a boutique feel that's peaceful and welcoming, and the team was warm, attentive, and genuinely hospitable without ever being intrusive. If you're looking for somewhere stylish, well-located, and genuinely comfortable in George Town, I'd definitely recommend Soori Penang. It's the kind of place that makes you want to come back, and I know I will.

Perfectly located in the middle of UNESCO district. Room immaculately designed with a blend of Scandinavian minimalist and Chinese fenshui style. Staff is friendly and helpful. I wish we stayed longer. It is far more luxurious than the star system indicates.

My partner and I almost booked somewhere else and I'm glad we didn't. Soori Penang is located right in the middle of George Town's heritage zone, beside Khoo Kongsi temple, with easy access to Armenian Street, the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and some of the best street food in the city, all within walking distance. The hotel is stunning - high ceilings, airwells (a typical design feature of the original shophouses), and lots of original details still intact. The staff were among some of the best we've come across. Helpful and full of useful local recommendations rather than the usual tourist-routine suggestions. For a couple looking to explore George Town properly, this is the right base.

Soori Penang offers a rare kind of calm in the heart of George Town. My suite was beautifully designed—quiet, spacious, and filled with soft light, making it a wonderful retreat after walking the city. One of the most memorable moments was the private night viewing of the Khoo Kongsi temple, illuminated and almost empty, which felt magical and deeply atmospheric. The hotel also arranged a ride through the old streets in their custom trishaw, a charming way to experience the neighbourhood. What truly stood out was the service—warm, thoughtful, and personal throughout the stay. A very special place that blends heritage, design, and hospitality gracefully.

I had read about this new hotel and decided to visit to get an impression of the atmosphere. I stayed at another hotel in Penang this time but might come back for another stay.I was met by a very unpleasant man at the locked entrance and had to tell him very firmly my request. I was then showed around the hotel which was empty, didn't get offered any option for a refreshment. The rooms and the small bar and lounge look very bare of any comfort or colour, no hint of any local decoration which would fit in the historical building.
