I finally visited the "must-see in a lifetime" Americas exhibition that's been all over my feed! My only takeaway after seeing it: truly stunning, but also truly crowded.. 🏛️ The Shanghai Museum has cleared out three floors of its People's Square branch for this exhibition, bringing together 1,129 groups and nearly 3,000 precious artifacts from top cultural and museum institutions in Mexico, Peru, and China. The timeline spans from 1200 BC to the 16th century, effectively condensing the history of the Zhou-Qin-Han-Tang-Ming dynasties into a single exhibition. Among the over 2,600 artifacts from 13 Mexican cultural and museum institutions, a large number of museum-grade treasures are leaving Mexico for the first time; among the 325 exhibits from the Larco Museum in Peru, 116 are also leaving Peru for the first time. 🌟 Key artifacts 1️⃣ Olmec Colossal Head No. 4: Weighing 4.5 tons, this is the first exhibit in the hall. Its expression, calm yet majestic, lets you feel the gaze of a ruler from 3,000 years ago. In an era without wheeled tools, the Olmec people transported tens of tons of giant stone from dozens of kilometers away—a true miracle. 2️⃣ Stela 51 of Calakmul: Standing 4 meters tall, it is one of the most outstanding portrait works in the history of Maya art and the tallest artifact in the exhibition, displayed in a dedicated outdoor case. 3️⃣ Painted Ceramic Cup of the Maya Maize God: A masterpiece in the style of Maya codices, depicting the young Maize God gracefully emerging from the water, symbolizing the sprouting and regeneration of life. Such pottery served as luxurious vessels for holding cacao during royal banquets. 4️⃣ Teotihuacan Feathered Serpent Obsidian Knife: The black stone is polished to a cold, sharp gleam. The Feathered Serpent motif symbolizes the movement of the universe, and it was with obsidian tools that the Teotihuacan people built the 63-meter-high Pyramid of the Sun. 5️⃣ Tlaloc Ceramic Vessel: Unearthed from the Templo Mayor site of the Aztecs, it is covered in blue pigment. The Rain God wears goggles, has exposed fangs, and double serpents coil to form its eyebrows. It was a sacred medium for the Aztecs to pray for rain and sustain the lifeblood of their empire. 6️⃣ Chimu Culture Gold Headdress: An X-shaped gold crown adorned with feline faces, bird wings, crests, and curved beaks, with blue sodalite eyes inlaid with gold beads—three sacred animals gathered in one piece. The wearer was regarded as a highly majestic ancestor. 👨👩👧👦 I recommend booking online in advance. Arrive early or choose a weekend night session, and allow at least 4 hours. 🎧 If you don't want to just breeze through, there are several guided tour options available in the museum: Official audio guide: Kids' version CNY 20/set, adult version CNY 30/set AR glasses guide: CNY 60 Official human guide: CNY 150/person for a group tour, duration about 1.5 hours ⚠️ There are no full meals sold inside the exhibition halls. Although there are energy stations and a South American-style food area, they mainly offer light snacks and specialty coffees, so it's hard to get a full meal. 📍 Shanghai Museum, People's Square Branch 📅 July 9, 2026–November 14, 2027 🎫 Book tickets online; there are also manual ticket counters on-site.
