Flowers have started to bloom all over Japan to welcome  spring, including plum flowers, kawatsu sakura and rapeseed flowers. I found a rare kind of blossoms hidden in a lesser known neighborhood called Kuramae 蔵前. This mimosa tree shines with its fresh and bright color of yellow around the end of Feb every year. There is a big kawatsu sakura tree next to it and they bloom around similar time. A very pretty and quiet environment to be enjoyed. ##Tokyo ##Hanami #freehotelstay

Hidden flower viewing spot - Mimosa bloom in Tokyo 

Lake Baikal is special in many ways: it’s the largest freshwater lake by volume, it’s also the deepest and oldest lake and one of the cleanest on earth. Olkhon Island is an island on the lake and it’s about 6 hours drive from Irkutsk. The road is a bit bumpy but it’s worth the effort and time. The tranquility there is so unique. I really love walking around the small town and people there are nice. Early summer is the best time to visit so we went in June, but I would like to see it in winter with everything changes from blue to white.

A must visit place in Russia, but pretty far away from Moscow.

Lake Baikal is special in many ways: it’s the largest freshwater lake by volume, it’s also the deepest and oldest lake and one of the cleanest on earth. Blue sky, blue lake for beautiful summer

Just 45mins by car from Taipei city, Yehliu Geopark showcases the power of nature by formation of nature art piece. Erosion by the sea create unique shaped rocks. These honeycomb and mushroom rocks have nicknames according to their shapes, the most well-known ones are Queen’s Head and Dragon’s Head. There is a designated wooden pavement for walking inside the park, makes it very easy to explore.

We went to Yading scenic area around end of Nov. It’s warmer than we expected and it’s the start of low season that entrance to the park was free. Less tourists, good weather and free entrance make such a great timing to visit the magnificent site. The park is home to three mountains considered holy by Tibetan. Tourists can hike up to over 4,000m to see the two high-altitude lakes. The trail itself is nicely paved but because of the high altitude, we have to walk very slow. But it’s rewarding to see the incredible color of the water and the peaks when we reached the goal.

Holy mountain trail over 4000m

Lake District located in northern England is a national park with hilly terrain and many lakes which is rare in the country. The biggest lake in the area is Windermere and it’s also the base of tourist activities. Driving along the lake side and across the hilly landscape, you can find not only beautiful view of the lake but also nice hotels and restaurants, sightseeing spots like the house of Beatrix Potter (author of The tale of Petter Rabbit), and many more. You can easily spent three days exploring the area with getting bored.

If I have to pick only one must visit site in China, I will choose Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. It’s the most well-preserved treasure of Buddhism art and history from more than 1,000years ago. There are over 750 caves built from 5th to 14th century, about 500 of them were decorated with murals and sculptures. 60 of them are opened to the public now. An entry ticket includes a visit to 8 random caves with tour guide (in mandarin only during pandemic time). Photography is strictly prohibited inside the cave so it’s better to focus on admiring the beauty of the art works that stands over time.

Mingsha mountain is literally translated to the “Singing sand mountain) which is about 5km from Dunhuang city center. The natural phenomenon of singing sand from wind makes the name. Beautiful sand dunes not far from city and the crescent spring in the middle attract visitors from all over the country. It is particularly pretty during sunset. You can rent shoe covers if you don’t want sand goes in your shoes.

Visited Nanjing around the end of March, which is the best timing for cherry blossom viewing, we headed to the most famous site for such and it didn’t let us down. XuanWu Lake (玄武湖) used to be the largest royal garden lake and it’s still a very important leisure spot for people who live in the city. It’s free to walk around the lakeside and islands on the lake. Be noted that there are only a few designated entrance to the park and it can be quite a walk if you started from a wrong spot (that’s what happened to me, walked for like 30mins to find the entrance). Cherry trees were blooming all over the park, very pleasant to enjoy the color of spring.

Millions of people pay tribute to him every year here. If you have time, don’t miss the chance to explore the nice and easy, short walking trail in the area. Submerge yourself into green and nature.

Important historical site in Nanjing

Shangri-la in Yunnan province is no doubt a beautiful place to visit. It’s one of the most well known tourist heaven so many sites are popular and sometimes crowded. I have visited there twice before so I wanted to see something lesser known. Owner of our hotel recommended Balagezong National Park to us, which turned out to be my favorite spot of the trip. The road to and inside the park was personally financed by a former villager lived inside this valley, who determined to improve life of those still in the village. It was done and opened to public as a national park only around 10 years ago, which is comparatively new in Shangri-la. Scenery inside the park is simply stunning. Designated tourist bus brought us first to the top of the valley to enjoy the view from above. The hanging walkway built on rock looked scary but it offered an excellent view of the massive gorge, which lead us to a glass bottom viewing platform. Be prepared if you are scared of height. Final stop was deep down the gorge, walking along the river on the beautiful walkway was healing and brought us close to nature. Highly recommended for everyone who plans to visit Shangri-la.

Huangshan (黄山) is easily accessible from Shanghai, less than 3 hours on high speed train then you are at Huangshan North station, which is the nearest town to explore the amazing mountain park. The UNESCO World Heritage site is well known for its peculiarly- shaped granite peaks, sunrise, pine trees and hot springs. The walk inside the park can be quite challenging if you are heading to the famous peak of 蓮花峰. But it’s rewarding after all those steep uphill stairs. The scenery is breathtaking! It will take 6-8 hours to cover a big loop include the peak so make sure you arrive the park as early as possible so as to avoid crowds and give enough time for the walk. You can also stay in one of the handful hotels inside the park for the sunrise and a more leisure pace to explore.

Less than an hour ride on metro from the city center, Gongqing National Forest Park is my favorite park in Shanghai. The park is designed to be covered with different kinds of landscape with forest remains the main feature. More than 200 types of tree, total of more than 300,000 trees are planted here. From end of May to mid June is the Hydrangea season here, different colors of hydrangea can be found blooming around the park. This park is nice to visit in different seasons for different plants and flowers.
