We will disseminate information about the "Meiji Gakuin Birthplace Monument" in Akashi-cho, Chuo-ku. This time, I visited the "Meiji Gakuin Birthplace Monument" on January 22, 2024. To access the "Meiji Gakuin Birthplace Monument", take Exit 6 of "Shintomicho Station" on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line and go straight in the direction of travel about 350 m. From the middle of the road, there is a signal (the display name "Sakai Ohashi"), so cross the pedestrian crossing and turn right, and go about 150 m and go to the left hand of the sidewalk.
If you go west from the birthplace of Women's Seigakuin, you will find a parking lot of a pharmacy, and there is a monument in the corner. In 1863 at the end of the Edo period, a private school (Hebon School) was established in the Yokohama settlement. This Hebon Juku was moved to Tsukiji in 1880 (Meiji 13), and this was the mother of "Meiji Gakuin" in 1887 (Meiji 20).

Akashi Town was a foreign settlement in the early Meiji era. There were many schools that conducted Western-style education. One of them is the Tokyo Uchisai Seminary, the predecessor of Meiji Gakuin, which has a campus in Shiba Platinum. Now, there is only a small stone monument on the roadside.
It's surrounded by fences in a corner of the parking lot.
